November 17, 2002. CARDIFF, WALES, UK- In what can only be described as anti-climactic, Marcus Gronholm wins his second World Rally Championship. Gronholm, the 2000 WRC champ, pulled out to an early lead in the championship and never let up. In a post Rally interview, Marcus said: "Yes, it was fantastic. The engineers at Peugeot always prepared the car perfectly for every race." Following close behind was Brittains own Richard Burns. The Peugeot's finishing 1-2 was the best result team manager Corrado Proverra could have hoped for. Through tears of joy, Mr. Proverra praised the efforts of the whole team. "Having two world champions on our team was a clear advantage. The Peugeot is unbeatable! The entire workforce at Peugeot is so proud! We must also remember Gilles Panizzi and Harri Rovenpera for their contributions to our effort."

While the Peugeot success was no surprise, Subaru's four-time world champion Tommi Makinen, was a surprise third place. Although close in WRC points, he still trailed Spaniard Carlos Sainz and Scotlands Colin McRae; both former world champions. However, early on day two, Sainzs' Ford Focus suffered a suspension failure and he did not finish. And, in a strange turn of luck, Colin McRae and co-driver Nicky Grist crashed out at the same place on the course as they did in the last two years. No points for either Ford In the last rally of 2002.

As the rest of the field was so far behind, none could be reached for comment.

All of the top 10 drivers will be returning to the same teams for 2003. However, expect a serious challenge to come from another French team; Citroen. This team is deep on driving talent as well as engineering and corporate resources. Watch for Phillipe Bugalski and Sebastian Loeb to drive the red cars to the front of the field next year.
