December 28th, 2006 18:08 #1 Which EFI Fuel Pump New or Salvage?
I have been looking around to figure out which fuel pump to run when I put a cell in my Ranger (97 w/ 4.0l stock). I found a few new pumps that aren't to expensive:
Walbro
MSD
And have also found by searching here on RDC that some salvaged pumps might work.

I want to go with a pump outside the cell to make field repairs easier. I was also considering the salvage option to get more then one and carry a spare and possibly still save some $$..
So what pump has worked for you or even has failed on you?

Early (mid-80s) multi-port injected Fords used a 2 pump system. A low pressure pump in the tank to get the fuel out and a high pressure pump inline. You could use a universal inline pump at the tank and the OE (or aftermarket replacement) further downstream to create the pressure you need. This system was used successfully for quite a while and rarely failed. The later model single in-tank pumps fail waaaaaayyyyyy more often.
I know a little German... he's sitting over there.

Tony:
My situation with Bronco is a little different since I'm running my EFI out of a tank instead of a cell, but I've used an '88 F250 junkyard pump for 10 years on my truck now without any problems. The '86-'89 Ford trucks used the external, frame-mounted, high-pressure pump that SteveG mentions. Ford used the same pump (Bosch) on everything from the 2.3L Rangers up thru the 460-powered trucks. You can pick them up all day at the pick-a-part yards for ~$10-$20 each. Great for spares if nothing else. Like I said, I'm still running on my original junkyard pump after 10 years on my 5.0 and I carry another junkyard spare as a backup.

Set up My roommates ranger with an 88 bronco pump. Nice mount and rubber cushion. Works well with the fuel cell. If you get it from a junk yard, cut the end fittings on the lines and take them too. Makes it way easier to attach lines to it.

Todd and Brian are you using just the single pump or do you have a low pressure pump also as Steve mentioned?
Thanks for the help!
