07 Baja 1000 driving info needed

I have a some questions about driving to Cabo later this year with the chase truck.
    1. How long is the drive from Ensenada to Cabo?
    2. Can we drive thru San Felipe or have to take Hwy 1 - Or is there a way from San Felipe to Hwy 1 down South?
    3. Is there gas stations open all night for the case truck?

Re: 07 Baja 1000 driving info needed

    1) It took us 26 hours driving non-stop to get back from this years 1000, tack on a few more hours to come from cabo.
    2) you can only make it sop far on the gulf side(Puertecitos has an OK road going to it after that especially if the race goes that way forget it, the race traffic will run over any chasers), Hwy 1 on the pacific side while narrow(read-pull in you mirrors on you f350) is the only real option.
    3) yes there are gas stations that aree open all night but it is not such a great idea to travel at night(the stations were discussed on this board a couple of weeks prior the this years 1000.
    4) good luck!!

about 990 miles, yes there are gas stations Pemex, in all the larger towns, the longest stretch is from El rosario to Guerro Negro, but there are stations along the way. Plan to take a 5 gallon can at lease depending on what mileage you get.

www.discoverbaja.com has alot of mileage info and other needed info on teaveling baja.

AAA has a good Baja map. Also you can get good maps at the link in the last post.

Don't count on gas between El Rosario and Guereo Negro, about 230 miles. Even the station at Jesus Maria (200 miles south of El Rosario - home of Mama Carmelita, worlds best tamales) was closed during one of our preruns last year. Catavina and the LA Bay jct (both along this stretch) both often have guys selling fuel out of the back of a pickup but you can't count on them. El Rosario and Guerero Negro are open 24x7 so you need at least a 230 mile range to make it at night.

I've always found it OK to drive at night around race time. It's the rest of the year I would be a little more leary of pigs, cows, horses, goats, donkeys, stopped cars, etc. Although, last time I drove in the middle of the night during a race, I hit an 8" bolder in the middle of a flat straight highway in the middle of totally flat dezert, not near any house or town, at about 85 MPH, in a dinky rental car, that had 5" of ground clearance. It sounded like a shot gun went off, inside the car. Hello!

If you must drive at night, you can always just follow someone else, a safe distance back. Always act as if any oncoming big rig is going to be at least a little bit in your lane, especially at night. And also if there is any hazard of any kind, there may or may not be any warning.

Re: 07 Baja 1000 driving info needed

Unless you are chasing for a slow class, you will never keep up with the race car, and with traffic you might not keep with with a Class 11. Suggest you use multiple Chase vehicles and leap frog the course. Best suggestion is use 2 for the upper part of the race and 2 for the lower. The lower chasers can leave the day before the race start and rest and wait for the car and then chase to Cabo. Just remember, what ever you do: BE CAREFUL, CHASING IS USUALLY MUCH MORE DANGEROUS THAN RACING. DO NOT DRINK ANY ALCOHOL. BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. IF YOU GET CAUGHT IN TRAFFIC, ACCEPT THAT YOU'RE GOING TO BE LATE, DO NOT ENDANGER YOURSELF OR OTHER PEOPLE BY TAKING CHANCES TO MAKE UP TIME. Baja is a true adventure, enjoy it and make sure you can come back next year.

Thanks for all the information so far. I am just trying to figure out how we are going to pull this off. We will have limited chase trucks coming from Washington state. Maybe we might rent so cars? It does look hard to keep up with the bike and I agree we are going to need as many as we possible can.
