    Dakar 2007 - Restday after Stage 7

Saturday is no racing in Dakar and that means you the rdc visitor may get a good night of sleep in. The Competitors will get a day of rest just to return at full force on Sunday for Stage 8.

whats the deal with working on the cars for the day break? Do they get the entire time to prep the cars or just get a few hours?

The entire time. They can do what they want with their cars except some things like changing the engine. So today is no rest for the mechanics ... They will have a break tommorrow night on the marathon-stage without external service.

Is there a time when they can change the engine? If so, is there any kind of time penalty for doing so?

No, they are not allowed to change the engine during the race. The bikes yes, not so the cars.

Edit: I guess it's on page 11 of the reglement:

"10.7 The engine block and chassis, identified with a mark during scrutineering, and the crew are associated with a race number; these three elements are indisociable during the running of the Event."

Since I don't indulge in "projections" I'll go straight to the questions I THINK I can answer.

Re: Chris Blais...w/o giving all the details of my research it looks as though ASO credited him w/12 - 14 min.

Re: Jonah Street...w/drew in a previous Stage with blown motor.

Re: #556 They finished Stage 7 around #26 or so.

Re: Bailey...Unbelievable, but I think he's still in the Rally. I haven't checked the Withdrawals this a.m.

Yes it has been a good one so far. Full of the usual unexpected, but also very tragic with the loss of Elmer.

With Ari out of the race after burning his car to the ground, and Mark almost 2 hours back, Mark will be assigned to the supporting role. This is especially true with Gil and Carlos running neck to neck. So Mark can still go as fast as he can, he just won’t be able to be physically ahead of Gil or Carlos. If for some reason he has a better time and starts in front he will pull over to let them pass. Mark could get a top 5 but doubtful he could get a top 3, UNLESS Gil and Carlos both screw the pooch and have to abandon. The way the course goes from here with all the trees, if you make a mistake you could end your race rather quickly. Look what happened to Peterhansel last year.

If RG finishes, and I really hope he does, he will get a top 10, I doubt he can get much higher; a top 5 is out of reach at this point.

Blais deserves the time back just for being the true sportsman he has showed himself to be. What an awesome guy! He’s my hero!

I hope the Turbo and Will are having fun; it doesn’t look like it has been overly stressful to this point.

Bailey team is doing great keeping him in the race! Their perseverance is what the Dakar is truly all about.

Hopefully the rest of the guys can make it to the finish as well.
