Re: Boxer bill will take 2.4 million acres
I see that Magic Mountain is on that list, too...
For nearly 25 years, the California Rally Series has been responsibly using the Magic Mountain and Angeles Crest Forest for the Rim of the World Rally. It angers me that, despite this responsible use, a new permit is not being granted for the event due to the event being “inconsistent with agency direction and the Angeles National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan.” (USFS words). Now I can see why. It's not like (we) ralliests forage new trails through the dense forest - all our events are on existing roadways within the Forest.
Rim of the World Rally, for the forseeable future, is reduced to side-by-side stadium racing. While this is fun, it's no match for the forest stages that have been run before. This is truly disappointing.
I don't usually get politically active in this stuff because, quite frankly, I don't know where to start. I'm a reasonable person, and sometimes agree that certain areas need to be protected under certain circumstances, but it has generally gone too far in my opinion. So, what can I do? Like many other people who enjoy the outdoors, I work (hard) for a living, and can't be mobile enough for lobby days and other events. There must be someplace to start though, right?
thanks,

If you don't know where to start, join a group. CORVA, Blue ribbon coalition, SDORC, give them all the $$$$ you can spare and let them do your fighting for you.
Actually, winning IS everything!

Exactly right about joining
I think it has gone from being something you need to do to becoming a obligation to join one of these groups if you use the desert.
They are shrinking the Barstow area as fast as they can make new signs and fencing off miles of Lucerne.
This is happening all over the state and country.
I have joined the Blue ribbon Coalition for the past years because I like the idea of all the money from all the interest going into a big pot for the legal fights.
I have joined Corva because I think they are more locally focused and might be the best shot at stopping some of this.
If everyone on all the desert racing forums joined one of these groups and hammered the politicians with the e-mails when needed it would be a huge voice.

The Rim of the world rally is a completely different issue. The forest
service decided last year there would be no more permits granted
for the event after 2007.
You are correct Forest says "inconsistent with agency direction and the Angeles National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan.” (USFS words)."
The rally is a catch 22....They claim that the rally tore up the roads,
but the orginizers paid to have the roads re-graded. Of all the asinine
things, The Forest service said the roads were being graded too well
after the events. Go figure.

Hijack on....
Wayne, hope to meet you at Lobby Day...I'll be hanging with the SDORC folks and also with the District 37 Dualsport folks.
Hijack Off
Yep, a bunch of us from SDAR sent letters to Boxer and our representatives, expressing our thoughts about "NO MORE WILDERNESS" !!
Backcountry designation (as BRC calls it) and multiple use is where it needs to be. Education and enforcement are important so we can all use our public lands !!
