Mounting Roof Rack Directly to Roof
I'm building a basket-style rack for my 88 Suburban. I decided to mount the rack directly to the roof instead of making some cross bars which would wrap around the body and into the frame as a sort of exo-cage. The rain gutters above the doors are bolted on with sheet metal screws so can't support a rack.
I'm trying to find some rubber grommet or seal or whatever to go between the roofrack mount and the roof as to prevent water leakage.
Ideas?
Thanks

This may sound half-a** but I used silicone and haven't had a problem yet.

I say use RTV or something like that. I used that on my old rack on my Bronco shel and it held up for 10 years of off roading until I removed it last year.
The other thought is to get a bike tube or some type of sheet and cut the rubber to the size of your mount and bolt it in place.

Re: Mounting Roof Rack Directly to Roof
There is some stuff I found at autozone that works great. It is called Right Stuff. I have used ultra silicone for years and on all kinds of race cars. I was told this is the newest and best stuff. I agree completely works well. It is in a can that very much resembles Cheese whiz.
