Ollie, Nikon has introduced a 40x that should do you well and should use the Nikon AF lenses. It is a entry level digital slr. I haven't got to play with one yet but go to the Nikon website for mor info.
I use B&H and Samy's. On the camera/lens/flash package I bought (2k worth), both were hundreds of dollars cheaper than Ritz and the counterpeople really know what they are talking about.
I have an XTi and like it a lot. I am not sure I would recommend it for someone new to dSLRs though. A friend has a Nikon D40 and his pictures are better straight out of the camera. I have to tweak my shots on the computer to get the same pop as the ones from the D40. Thats OK with me but not everyone wants to do a lot of computer work to get good pictures. The XTi can be set to avoid the computer work but it isn't a process for rookies. You have to specify custom sharpness, contrast, and color saturation levels.
You can look around at my pictures on the website in my signature. The ones that were processed in the computer are obvious.
