Honda Pits
Does Anyone Know how to sign up for Honda Pits @ the 500?
I used Baja pits @ the 250 & they were great But I never had any Mechanical problems. Is it a good idea to continue to use Baja Pits, and also sign up for Honda Pits incase something breaks That Baja Pits Wont have & say one of my three parts quads cant make it to the pit. Maybee honde will have that part for a TRX450R? I Just want to cover all bases & have the best support possable.
For the 1000 is there anyone that offers some chase support for the san felipe area? So I dont loose my guys on the way to cabo?
Thanks In advance for the help. What a great group on this site.

Re: Honda Pits
Not sure about Honda pits in Mexico, but last year when I did Vegas to Reno on my TRX I checked on Honda pits. I was told they really do not have that much in the way of parts, they said they might have a wheel and tire, but that may be about it. If you did have a mechanical problem, you still may be waiting on your chase guys to get you the part you need. Again, this is what they told me for Vegas to Reno, maybe for Mexico they do have some parts.

Why would you sign up for Baja Pits if you already signed up for Honda Pits? BP is really only gas. Honda is at least gas, radio comm, and possibly more (like a wheel). Why do both?
Look at it this way...... why limit yourself regarding a flat or broken part by signing up with other than Honda Pits? Let's say you are at a Pit and happen to have a flat and Honda has a wheel for you, great. But if you're doing BP or Mag7 there is no way they'll have a wheel for you.

I'm not sure I follow that one. You mean you want to hire a chase truck for the Hwy.3 & 5 section so your trucks can go down Hwy.1?
If so, there's lots of people out there who'll offer some help chasing just to be involved.

Re: Honda Pits
I Have Not yet signed up for Honda Pits. I don't Know how to contact Honda pits. I did use Baja pits for the 250 & planed on using them again. but if Honda pits are better & they will take us I might want to switch. What do you think? I will have enough spares for a front & rear tire @ every pit for the 500 & three spare quads in separate trucks for parts although not really a way to get the parts out to the middle of the course.

Re: Honda Pits
There are three main pit services available for SCORE baja quad/bike classes:
Honda for honda 4 stroke riders. Mag 7 for all makes and models. Baja Pits for all makes and models.
All three offer radio communications, fuel, and basic help.
The only way to have spare parts waiting is to drop them off with the pit service a few days before the race. This way they will be waiting at the pit when you come in. Its exactly the same for each of the companies.
The idea that Honda will have any spares for you is just wrong. They wont, and they will tell you that. Most of their pits are in remote areas where box vans cant reach. Its just 2-3 guys in a pick up truck or two with some banners to guide you in, a few fuel dump tanks, a fold up table, and some basic wrenches. Every 4th-5th pit Honda has a "master pit" and that is where the mechanics and box vans are. Its a place where most would want to change tires, filters, etc. But even on these 3-4 master pits at the Baja 1000 you wont find an available spare quad wheel, unless a rider in front of you has dismounted one and left it, or you have strategically placed one.
I have used all these companies and its been my experience that Mag 7 offers the best service. They are staffed by 'baja guys' who will do anything it takes to keep you in the race. Honda pits can be that way, but also some Honda pits are really weird and will NOT do anything except splash fuel. IMO Mag 7 pits usually have more tools and spares than Honda or BP's, they bring gatorade and bananas and power bars and always have a nice warm fire at night.
My only issue with Baja Pits is that in the past they have sub-contracted with local Mexicans. Thats fine, but when i have used them i've pulled in and found that no one spoke english in a few of the pits. Not good when you want to relay a message to your chase truck or something. Also--at one Baja 1000 all their fuel was stolen! I know Steny over at BP has worked hard to improve things in the last couple years, and i am sure they have improved things since i last used them 4 years ago.
Anyway--all the pit services are gonna get you fuel, all have good radio relays, and all will hold your own spares for you--but none will have quad parts for you.

Re: Honda Pits
Honda is usually booked for the next couple of races. I would suggest using mag 7. They just seem to be a little more profesional than BP.

Re: Honda Pits
I guess I lucked out when we were using Honda Pits. The end came off the rear shock and beat things up a bit getting stopped and crawling back to the pit with collapsed suspension. They had a new shock dog bone link and bolts. Made my day.

Re: Honda Pits
Its hard to anticipate what will go wrong but in the 1000, try to carry as much as you can with you on your bike. Of course you cant carry a spare top end or something but you can carry tie rods and ends, chain parts etc...
