    Wireless intercomm

Does anyone know if someone makes a wireless intercomm? I was thinking that this would be nice so that the driver and co-dog could still talk to each other when one has to get out of the vehicle to change a tire or whatever. With the advances in bluetooth, etc, I don't think this would be that hard to do.

Regardless of whether thats possible, being new to racing I was wondering how some of the established teams handle communication when one guy has to get out. Do you just shout at each other?

One last question: We want to put an external speaker in the truck we're building so we can hear the radio if we're broken down. Is this hard to hook up?

    Thanks in advance,
    Zambo

Could you use those little 1 watt FRS radios set of VOX (voice operated transmission) ? Use an earpiece with a mic built in. I dont know where you would store the radios during the race but its a thought. Might be able to make some sort of elastic armband with a pocket or something??
Your radio should have a speaker already, you could just unplug the jack in the back of the radio that goes to your helmets or intercom system distribution box, it should be loud enough to hear outside the vehicle unless there is someone driving by. Although the radio back may be so burried you cant get to it easily to unplug it.

    Re: Wireless intercomm

I was thinking that maybe those helmet radios that streetbike guys wear to talk to each other with a VOX setup might work too. It seems to me the devil is in the details. Lots of ideas that would all work but how to 1. get everything working together (radio and intercomm), 2. keep it simple, and 3. make it bulletproof enough to race with.

That would would fine for your intercomm, but there are no provisions for hooking that to a radio for your other communications. There are some ham radios out now that are bluetooth and you can use remote mikes, going to try one for pits, there may be somthing there that can move foward on placing this settup in a helmet.

    Re: Wireless intercomm

I think the easiest thing right now is to install an extra intercomm jack on each side of the vehicle. When in the pits, the crew chief can plug a headset into the jack to talk to the drivers. If the codriver has to get out for maintenance during the race, he can plug a long cord into the jack if he needs to talk to the driver. Maybe down the road we can get this working wirelessly so it isn't so complicated.

Donny at Thunderworks said there is a system available but I'm not sure of the price. I allways thought it would be sweet. Nothing worse than trying to yell at each other when working in the car. As for an external speaker, most radios have a 1/8" jack on the back that you can plug into. Radio shack or someone like that will have speakers preferrably an outdoor weather-proof type.

we have the co-driver carry a porable strapped to his chest with a jack that plugs into the helmet. when he gets out to dig or push the car he plugs his helmet into the portable and does his thing and can talk to the driver.
