    Wheel Question ???

Okay they were just taking about wheel weights during CUP practice. One of the commentators mentioned that Chrome wheels are not allowed because that weights won't stay on. He then proceeded to explain how MWR Chrome wheels are only chrome coated and that is why they are okay to use.

Now my question. Are not all Chrome wheels just coated or are there some made entirely out of chrome????

He mis-spoke. Chrome wheels are plated, you can chip the plating off. This new "Chrome" is actually a powder coating made to look like chrome. So in essence, the "chrome" (it is not really chrome) is painted on. I almost did my boat trailer with it, thought it might be a little over kill.

    Re: Wheel Question ???

It's all good, I am off for two weeks picking my arse before spending the next 12 weeks in Wisconsin on business. I am either on line, working out in the garage while the boat is in upholstery or reading the Ronald Reagan Diaries, not a whole lot to do

    Re: Wheel Question ???

All I can tell you is what I learned when I got the trailer powder coated last year, and a few people I have talked to about it....They have this tinted clear powder coat that looks like annodize, you can have it done in just about any color that there is in annodize as well, it does not fade like the annodize, to help with the chrome effect, the apply a substrate over the steel surface, under the powder coat. Nascar uses a high strength low alloy steel wheel for strength, not aluminum, therefore it can not be annodized as you and I know it. Now the wheel manufacturer can chrome plate these wheels, but Nascar does not allow it, becasue the chrome plating can chip off, which in the past has caused issues with the wheel weights coming off as well, which you can imagine would be a big deal at 200 mph. That is why you have not seen the "Chrome" until the last year in Nascar, as this clear tinted powder coating process is relatively new........

gosh darn that L Mac !! lol

ya I would assume its some special NASAesqe type of process.. regular everyday powder coating wouldnt hold up to having tires mounted all the time.. I wouldnt think..
