That would get you 3 countries and a ton of varying terrain.

We need a world class rally here in north america, something that could become part of the world rally circuit. Its silly we have such a rich history of desert racing, but no world class rally.

How about this:

Reno to Cabo--it would cover much of the ground we all race on. Sort of a 'greatest hits' rally course. BITD organizes the US terrain. SCORE does the Baja miles.

Get Casey/BITD on board to run the V2R course backwards. Thats day one.

Then liason to Parker and do an extended loop-the indians would be up for it, Casey works the BLM contacts.... Thats day two.

Day three we liason to the Altar desert and do a loop in the sand dunes. Day three. Huge bivouac on the beach south of El Golfo after crossing the dunes. Yuma 4X4 clubs set it up (they already do an annual Altar weekend...)

Day four is Mexicali to San Ignacio via Laguna Salada, Felipe, Cocos, B of LA. Sal Fish and SCORE set it up. Huge bivouac at the San Ignacio airport.

Day five is San Ignacio to Cabo--again using SCORE. We huge the east coast all the way down.

Mix it up with some alternative or parallel tracks here and there, all found with road book navigation. No pre-running. All pits in one place (entry fee includes fuel). Everyone camps out at a 'bivuac'

Tecate, Red Bull, KTM, BFG, Herbst, Mc Millan, Monster, Ford all sponsor it. NBC covers it. Its run in mid January.

Thats my dream rally.

That's a great concept, but pretty tough to pull off with all the BLM and related issues. We have part of your suggested route ready to go, with full blown Dakar style roadbooks, designated bivouacs, and more. Many of the American & Canadian Dakar 2008 competitors will be doing this training route pretty soon. There's a great variety of terrain as you can imagine from the layout. From a 9500ft high elevation to a minus 200ft low in one day, and about 1100 miles end-to-end over a couple of days. I just finished pre-running it, and final touches are going into the roadbooks now. Too bad we can't make this one a real race, but we are moving in the right direction.

For the past few years I have been wondering if it would be possible to do a race from Plaster City/Calexico all the way up to Bishop, or visa versa like this course is. Now I see it is actually possible with the acception of BLM restrictions. Very cool. Where can you get these roadmaps? It would be fun to take a few days off of work and do one of those stages.

I'd like to see a bigtime rally done in Canda somewhere...Northwest Territories?? Labrador?? There is tons of wide open terrain that would be super different and challenging...Tough to get a beer in some parts but if you want long distances and real wilderness...thats a place to shoot for...

Right now all this is limited to the small gang going to Dakar and those aiming for Dakar in the near future. It's totally focused on giving our guys the best training possible before they head for Dakar.

BTW, there are several short sections of pavement in the route we've prepared. That's normal in Dakar as well, though they often have a hundred miles or more of pavement at the beginning or end of a stage. All vehicles have to be street licensed(just like Dakar). Our 2007 route is about 95% dirt. We did our best to minimize or completely eliminate the "liaison" sections.

I noticed that you have more Cap Headings in your road book than what is provided by the ASO.

Maybe it's just the one page you have posted but when I look at it I feel like I am viewing the plotted course on my Lowrance 6500.

The word Rally is pretty open to interpretation... one definition is a race run over public roads... so are we talking Dakar or WRC? London to Sydney, Pan American, or the Peking to Paris? All are Rally events but with totally different equipment.

I've got to dream bigger... I tagged along for the Peking to Paris and now I'm not sure what I need to do to top it. Baja racing just seems too easy (and less enjoyable) compared to the endurance rally stuff.
