Canon Guadalupe ... Torched (per Teeny Tommy Brown)
tony, we were pre-running for the CODE race this last week end, i strayed over to Canon Guadalupe to show the boys
some place they have never seen (Note: south of Mex Hwy 2 from Mexicali-a-Tecate ... along Laguna Salada mountain face) ............ well, Tues night it all burnt to the ground.looked bad we were there for about
an hour, pretty severe fire, everything went, palm trees, palapas, buildings, trucks, etc.
The race goes on forever ... and the road never ends!

How much of the surrounding area was burned??? Doesnt the race go near this area(CODE 300)I can only imagine who is going to get the blame for this...regardless of who really did it.

Well, I Can say that it's not full of serious foliage like Yosemite so how much IS there to burn? "Blame"? I can suggest that the Mexican underground will find out and, well, they no comin' round no more. Life as a Baja criminal is harsh, brutal, and short. No delays, appeals ... just the Rumarosa slam.
Of course, I could be wrong ... might have been performed by some 5/1600 Coalition members. Or local yokels. I vote for the latter.

If they didn't keep up on removing the dead palm fronds, there could be a lot of fuel. Many of the palms there showed burn scars from previous fire(s). A hot windy day could have been perfect for a bad fire.
Tommy, did both sides of the canyon burn??

TOMMY ADDS THIS
Caretaker Alberto, who lives on site on the north end, said no one was there, no storm, no lighting … nothing
He woke up about 10:30 by the dog freaking’ out, looked out the window saw orange, stepped outside and all he could do was grab 2 gallons of drinking water and he and the dog did everything they could to get up that granite mountain to keep from becoming a piece of "el carbon"
The dude was still a little freaked out on Saturday talking about it,
He said the huge palm fans that hang under the trees would explode sending burning embers everywhere, then massive heat-generated winds came and carried those mini-torches across both sides of the canyon, I bet that was sight to have seen.
Our roving landscape expert Mr. Burgin, a.k.a. "Red", peeled the side of a palm open with his trusty pocketknife and said they are full of water and should rebound in good shape, and in some ways the fire may have been a good thing:
Those trees have never been trimmed, and it was bound to happen sooner than later, as lighting really likes palm trees, and everyone of them had huge fuel cells hanging under each one of them ... tbb

At least there is a sliver lining to everything, hope they are able to rebuild that place to the way is was or even better...
