Do you know the maker? Is there any markings on them?
There is a magic ray gun alloy tester thingy that some high end machine shops have. They are used kind of like a hand held temp tester gun. You point and shoot at whatever you have and it tells you the alloy. I don't know how expensive they are, or what they are really called but I would guess that they are pricey.
I would call around Carson City where you are at and ask some of the shops if they have one of these. You might try Nevada Heat Treat at 775-246-1040, or try the Mallory factory, or that place that makes the rocker arms for the Nascar teams.
