Just wondering how many quad teams show up to race the Dakar. i am a quad racer with racing experiance, i have done a lot of the big off road races and i think it would be fun to race Dakar on a quad some day.

I knew a guy in South Africa who was one of the first to race Dakar on a Quad. He did not have much back up. He managed to finish about 18 hours ahead of his closest competitor if I remember correctly.

Nick,
Quads and "bikes" face most of the same issues in the same budget range when aiming for Dakar. You might consider hooking up with the "local" Dakar bike group to find out what it takes to do Dakar. It's NOTHING like any of the desert races here!!! Here's what we all did in 2006:

And what we just did two weeks ago for the coming Dakar (lots more details):

Just as a starter, figure on spending maybe $50,000 for a minimum effort, and closer to double that for a well supported effort. If you're serious, you'll soon get to know Charlie Rauseo: http://www.rallymanagementservices.com
Darren Skilton, on this forum, is the USA rep for the event. If you get serious you'll need to talk to him as well.
Also, Sterling North from Alaska has wanted to do Dakar on a Quad. But I haven't heard from him in a while.
Good luck!

i have a few goals in life, and racing the Dakar is at the top is my list of things to do, race wise, thanks for the help that rally management service website is very helpful. i am hopefully shooting to make the 2010 Dakar.
thanks
Then it's the perfect time NOW to start asking a lot of questions and learning the ropes. Anyone who has been to Dakar will tell you it takes a HUGE logistical & organizational effort just to get to the starting line. And there are a million new things to struggle through and learn way before the race date.
Keep an eye on this RDC "Marathon Rallies" forum for most of the Dakar car/truck discussions, and watch the discussions in the "Race" forum at AdvRider.com for all the English language Dakar bike scoop.

There are an average of 10 to 12 quadsin any Dakar entry list lately.
Everything started with a Yamaha Blaster (YES A BLASTER!!!!!!) reaching Dakar in the late 80´s.
Most Quads are DS650, but in late years some ATV (Renegades) or even Raptor did the race. Also a spanish driver with a Gas Gas, and a Chzec who usually does it wth a modifyied Banshee, with TDM850 4stroke engine.
Bombardier (now Can Am) was the only one to support some drivers withthe DS650.
Only worrying thing is how to obtain a place in the entry list, I learnt that some drivers (spanish) were rejected because of the excessive entry list.
Doing the Dakar in a quad, that would be glory, but preparation and physical conditions (even more than money, which I also do no intend to spend in this adventure)
As i heard from czech quad competitor, who won Dakar 4 times, there will be 23 quad racers on start of 2008 Dakar including 2 women, but another 20 were rejected.
The list of approved entries is the following:
MACHACEK Josef (CZE) YAMAHA
AVENDANO Carlos (ESP) SUZUKI
PENA Jose maria (ESP) YAMAHA
MOREL Alan (FRA) CAN - AM
DECLERCK Christophe (FRA) YAMAHA
NAZARE SANTOS Joao carlos (POR) YAMAHA
OLIVEIRA Alexandre (POR) YAMAHA
GONZALEZ Juan manuel (ESP)
NOE TUBAU Eudalo (ESP) HONDA
HERBE Philippe (FRA) YAMAHA
CHARROING Alderic (FRA) YAMAHA
BRUSSELERS Alex (NED) BOMBARDIER
GAUDILLAT Pierre-Yves (FRA) CAN - AM
DUMONT Emmanuelle (FRA) BOMBARDIER
CLAIR Stéphane (FRA) BOMBARDIER
VERMANDE Philippe (FRA) BOMBARDIER
DE VILLIERS Cornel (AFS) CAN - AM
FOGLIANI Pietro (ITA) POLARIS
DELTRIEU Hubert (AFG) POLARIS
AUERT Brice (FRA) CAN - AM
AUERT Jean-Claude (FRA) CAN - AM
GUERAND Francis (FRA) POLARIS
LIPAROTI Camélia (ITA) POLARIS
I guess this because enry list does not mention Cathegories, but usually last year winner first in his class, and MACHACEK won last year, and lasta ones are undoubtfully quads.
MACHACEK runs aheavily modified Banshee with TDM850 4stroke engine.
Thanks for the info.
This guy Josef has a website, but I do not understand a word of Czech. (www.machacekjosef.com )
Now that I read your comment I find this in his site: "nového pouštního speciálu Desert Storm s racingovým motorem KTM ", that should stand for "I will use KTM engine", jejeeje
That would be a wise move, plenty ofKTM engines and spares in the Dakar, can have someone to lend anythng for that motor, but none for the TDM!!
