    Question Detroit

will my detroit cause any damage to my trans or driveline?

(i dont think it would - but id love to hear it from someone else instead of the voices in my head!)

ive had it for quite a while with no probs - but sometimes all that banging makes me a little uneasy.

    Re: Detroit

I run a detroit in my bronco and though it is not a race truck I play pretty hard in it. I had heard that detroits were noisy from alot of people but to be honest I have never had any noise out of mine. If you are concerned about the noise give unitrax a call and ask them. They are generally very easy to talk to and will give you good info.

    Re: Detroit

i run one in my 95 f150 9" rearend as well and have had no problems or noise to speek of. except the tire chearping in tight turns but it kind of cool actually. probably would do the spool next time as i don't hardly drive this truck around town anymore. manly use for prerunning only know.

    Re: Detroit

No, it's no harder on the driveline than an open diff, unless you mash the gas while turning a lot, that will cause it to lock and there are some people who think that running a spool (a locked Detroit is a spool) will damage your driveline. I know people who run spools on their daily drivers and have no drive-line issues, just more tire wear. The only issue with Detroits is that if you snap an axel you lose the diff, so I'd get some HD axel shafts if you haven't allready.

    Re: Detroit

i havent had any 'problems' per se....its just that there is a slight 'banging' noise going into gear...("gear lash" i believe is what ive heard)...almost sounds like a ujoint thing - but its been like this since the day it was installed...

    i was just curious.

    thanks

    Re: Detroit

Grab the driveshaft and violently shake it, if it moves around, the U-joints (of on an F150 I beleive there's a pillow block in the drive-line) are shot, simple to replace. If you get no movemnt there, either pull the back end of the shaft, or put the rear axel on jack-standsand the trans in neutral, turn the pinion back and fourth to see how much play there is, there should be a little, but if it seems excessive, take it back to the shop that set-up the gears and have them take a look.

    Re: Detroit

The noise most people associate with a detroit is when the the unit releases and allows the diff to slip. Depending on how heavy your car is it may not release very easily so you may not here it at all. It happens when you turn and th etires quit chirping, it sounds like a hammerblow to the diff. You may be having other issues if it is just going in to drive..

    Re: Detroit

I don't think it will cause any undue harm to the rest of the drivetrain....
my detroit is pretty noisy ,but still works fine, i have found that sitting at light and engaging the clutch and then releasing and engaging again it will do a loud violent pop when i take off .I guess this is locking or unlocking the dif. but it is still working fine.
