Battery Kill Switch position..........
Hi Guys,
My race org here is requiring us to put a battery kill switch in our dash boards....I am hesitant to do so, because I hate the Idea of a big caliber live cable running across the car seems to me to beat the purpose of the switch.
Where do you guys put these switches?
What brand do you suggest?
Do you run live wires all the way to your dash with no type of fuse box?

Re: Battery Kill Switch position..........
Just before the Baja 1000 I put a 1,2,1&2,Off switch right at the batterys so I could select which battery combo I wanted. It is reachable from the drivers seat with my belts off or real loose and will turn off all power. Then I ran a 2Ga Power from that switch to another On/Off switch on the dash. The Radio, GPS and IRITrack were wired straight to the 1,2,1&2, Off switch and everything else was wired to the On/Off switch. Incase of a fire, crash or Pit Stop I could turn everything necessary off and still have communications and GPS.

Agreed, that is the best way to set it up. We have the same set up.

Re: Battery Kill Switch position..........
It's my opinion that the battery switch should be mounted so that it can be reached by the driver or co-driver, or both for that matter, while they are belted. In an accident, one of the first things that needs to be done is to kill the power. Once you've evaluated to situation, and it's safe to do so, then you can turn stuff back on. My switch is right next to the seat, down low. On the class 1, it is directly between the seats, easily reached both both driver and co-driver. Some orgs require that it can be reached from outside as well, not a bad idea but sometimes not practical. This might be why they're requiring it on the dash....
I like the idea above about leaving power to the radio, gps and itrack. One thing to remember though, transmitting a radio is not a good idea if there was a fuel leak.....I'm sure the chances are small, but the consequences could be huge.....

Re: Battery Kill Switch position..........
They make some switches with long extension handles on them for drag cars etc. so you dont neccessarily have to have the switch and cables in your dash, just the handle. Definitely want to be able to reach them from your seats though.

Re: Battery Kill Switch position..........
We run a 'key' style battery shut off for emergency purposes. You can hook up a battery selector elsewhere, out of reach. This key shuts off all power and is a much smaller package then the battery selector.

You can see it on the passenger side of the shifter. Its a nice anti-theft take the key w/ you and the truck will not start.

I use it and am happy with it. They're all the same. I bought mine off Summit Racing.

Re: Battery Kill Switch position..........
My forklifts have remote batery switches. The switch is close to the battery so the live cable is as short as posable then the is a push pull cable routed to the dash so you can disconect when you have an emergancy.
Looks like this switch

with a hole driled in the lever with the cable going to it.
This also looks interesting.
