There is no true 'stree legal' class anymore. The closest is 1400. Must have steel cab, working doors, all body pieces @ start & must pass tech inspection. MDR started the 'street legal' class many years ago, but with a fuel cell and SMOG rules in CA it is difficult to have a street legal race vehicle.
SNORE, MDR, MORE all have 1450.
BITD has a general sportsman class, safari 1800
SCORE has a general sportsman truck class, 1500. Truck must 'look like a truck' to race.
Yeah it is pretty much impossible to have a true street legal race car in cali, between the fuel cell for smog reasons and non DOT approved seat belts..... Funny those are both things that make a vehicle safer, but aren't legal on the road

There are a few of us who drive Stock full and stock minis on the road... Just gotta make sure if you dont have glass in, to wear goggles and youre good. hahaha Im in AZ, which is alot more lenient than Cali, so I dont know how they run things.
Edit: by the way it sounds, your truck wouldnt be Stock Mini legal, but you could run 1450 by the sound of it... keep all the glass, lights functional, I dont know what else Cali tech inspection would require...

A number of people have done it. Smog guys have not been concerned with fuel cell. DMV brake inspection guy was not concerned about no DOT approved brake components. Never been stopped for non-DOT project tires, 5-point seat belts or obstructed view with V bars in windshield.
I drove my old 7s on the street in Utah, AZ, and Nevada.
Depends on where you live...I could run pretty much anything I want here in CO. The rock buggies running around here have fuel cells, 5 points, and such. I don't have a safety inspection or emissions though.
I wonder if one's insurance company would deny coverage if one were to be involved in an accident while using non-DOT tires and brakes. Certainly, Larry H. Parker would sway a jury, arguing that use of such items constitutes "gross negligence" and "utter disregard for the safety of others."
I know, I'm such a spoilsport!
Hey! You kids!! Get OFF my driveway!!! If you can't go away happy, just go away!

I provided to the DMV a brake inspection certificate provided by a technician licensed in brake inspection by the CA Bureau of Automotive Repair.
I will be more comfortable approaching my insurance company with this truck than I would if I had an accident with non-DOT approved 4” lifted truck.
