Gas prices. Whats it going to take.
This is the first thing I saw this morning:
http://money.cnn.com/2008/03/12/news...rss_topstories
They hit an all time high and are predicted to keep going up. What do you think its going to take before there is some kind of backlash at the oil companies. They make record profits quarter after quarter. I am all for a free market, but when will the people start slowing their use of oil. I say never. We will just keep using untill its gone. What do you think?

Supply and Demand.
Stop driving, and that will fix the problem.

Re: Gas prices. Whats it going to take.
I admit I don't fully understand the economics of the situation, but the little I do understand is that commodity investors are buying up oil commodities as a hedge against the falling dollar. This is on top of the increase in the price of crude from higher global demand (China, India and other developing countries buying up more and more oil to satisfy the thirst from their growing middle-classes.). This causes oil to increase in value, and since gasoline is made up of refined crude, then the higher price of crude eventually must be passed down to the cost of gasoline.
It appears to be a phenomenon where nothing can be done about it. There's not a viable, affordable alternative fuel technology available yet that can replace the world's need for oil. So we're just going to have to suffer through it.

OPEC is a damn cartel. you can't give them any backlash.
Companies will report record profits again next year.
Nothing will change except rising prices for fuel.
I agree with you. we won't stop till it's gone.

People have to be willing to have the oil drilling and production in this country.
The traffic lights in this country need to be fixed.
The cities have used the traffic lights to cripple traffic flow.
You drive 1 block then stop and idle at a traffic light for a couple minutes then drive a block then stop for another couple minutes.
Think how much fuel would be saved in this country every day if every car ,truck, bus whatever on the road was able to get just even 10 more green lights a day through synchronized traffic lights.
But no matter what the oil companies are not going to give up their record profits.

Good point on the traffic light syncronization, I'm sure it would make a big difference in big cities with lots of traffic...

Re: Gas prices. Whats it going to take.
I believe the biggest problem is the nation’s lack of a good public transportation system. The reason people drive so much is because they have to. Work and recreation alike often involve traveling many miles that could be done much more efficiently with a GOOD public transportation system. Although many areas of our country have tried to develop a decent system, subways in NY and BART in SF instantly jump into my mind; this hardly makes a dent in the ever escalating problems of gas prices and traffic congestion. What happens when gas prices in the U.S. par those in Europe? The public outcry is going to be incredible. How many of us would walk a few blocks or drive a couple miles to a station that can take/connect us to anywhere in So. Cal? I know I personally wouldn't mind filling up my tank a max of once or twice a month. Also don't only take into account how much you will save on gas, think about wear and tear, or how much insurance prices will drop if the average driver drives under 600 miles a month. Don't believe me; look at what many parts of Europe have done. People concerned about the theory of Global Warming should also push for more public transport. That’s my 2 cents, what do you all think of this?
