regular cab ranger cage
I'm designing a cage for a '88 ranger standard cab. I'm trying to be BITD compliant but at 6'1 and over 200# I don't think I can get 3" clearance between my cage and helmet. I've seen the B pillar hoop mounted outside the cab. Is this a good idea? If not what else can I do. Pics would be helpful.

If you cannot safely fit, get a bigger truck. Those cabs are small period. Not much you can do. I do not know if the exo cage is race legal or not.

Re: regular cab ranger cage
maybe outside wasn't the best way to describe it. behind the cab, not exo style. I have seen a SCORE legal (don't know what year-maybe not legal now) single cab with that setup. I can't be the only guy with a single cab, anybody got one they caged. getting another truck is not an option. I have a hard time believing that every legal cage has 3" clearance from your helmet. every pic I see looks like it has clearance issues with all the x bracing and all. even the extra cabs have bracing right behind the seat.

Those cabs are very small. Hard enough to get in without the cage. Sandking is right in that you should look for a bigger cab. Otherwise it will make for a very uncomfortable race for you.

OK so after reading your response I started to think maybe I'm nuts and I can't do it. then I looked on Autofab's site and the first two pics are the herzog and rough riders standard cab rangers. then on RDC a 7s standard cab for sale. all these trucks have the b pillar hoop inside the cab. there's no way they have 3" clearance with their helmets on. do they really check that with you in the car? I tried to call BITD but they're closed. I'll call on Monday. anybody gone through BITD tech and know?

Re: regular cab ranger cage
Johnny Johnson is 6'3" and raced std cab rangers for years. His cages were tucked tight to the corners and stitched tight to the sheet metal everywhere. I think they might have lowered the seat bar under the metal floor and only had the tabs through and the more I think about it I thought that they had the floor pans cut out and dropped and gained another couple of inches.

call score to make sure if it can go on the outside. i dont see a problem with it. i have seen many trucks over the years that have done it. i would build my next truck like that.

What about moving the seat and steering wheel inboard a bit?
I know a little German... he's sitting over there.

that's the one. I missed Casey today, hopefully tomorrow. that and a little double wall sheet metal removal inside and I should have plenty of room.
