Go....Desert Dirt Dog Racing!
I have not looked at this thread for a while. Some people have responded with some reasons that this truck was so good. The biggest benefit that the 1/4 eliptic spring offered is the way that they were mounted and the way that they loaded the chasis. With the springs mounted at the rear, then applying the energy up and through the spring box, in that fashion the energy lightens the front. All of Jon Nelsons early trucks with rear sprung, either 1/4 eliptic or Nezzie arms, gave the vehicles this advantage. I built my first race truck using the same springs that Jon used. This was also well before good shocks. This is why the truck was so much faster then any class 8 of the period. Pop's Nelson was the engineer behind these concepts.
And yes they did not invent 1/4 eliptic, only applied them to off road motorsports, Most of innovantion is simply application. If you think you have broken new ground, you probably have not. Bypass shock have been around since the before WWII, its just that the application happened to be aircraft.
When I went down to look at the truck it was apart. The frame and suspension was all restored. The cab was coverd in pigoen poop. There has been a 66 pre runner that someone started in the classifieds for months. I though about buying it and finishing it. But between my prerunner, my wifes prerunner and another vehicle that I built as a demonstrator for business I have my hands full. BTW, my wifes 73 Blazer 2WD pre runner is 4 Sale!
[QUOTE=TEAM D&D;431107]I remember seeing a truck that was only a solid tan color racing the parker 400 in about 1987. Is this that truck? What I remember is it was hooked to the ground and haul in ass. If anyone knows please post. I thought Robby was driving it. At that race some guy pulled in our pit with a flat,( class one car v8) lucky for him we had a rim that fit. The funny thing about it, He was European and and could not speak English and needed a pair of goggles. (no goggles just sunglasses) wanted water and was pouring it his eye's. I will never forget that one. Are team won 1st in 1600 Billy Reams. Good Times[/QUOT
