JD Brand was a "after-market parts maker" in Florida.............truth was he was a "cocaine" importer with lots of money to launder and put together a team of many classes , made the cover of a off-road mag , w/ a heli, etc.
I know they had "Cam Thieriot" on their Class 1 team back then.........
The guy would book a bunch of rooms at the Desert Inn in Vegas,......great party......cars and trucks and chopper in the parking lot..............
til the DEA busted him and JD Brand Racing was no more.........

is that the race that your axle broke around a corner just in front of me?
It was weird seing the wheel and axle slowly come out of the housing.....you drove a good race considering the other crazy class 8 drivers, we finished 14 overall with the James Garner Scrambler class 6 car. Larry won the class 6 honors with the 57 chevy and Jordan flipped the El Camino 50 yards from the finish as the chevy and the Scrambler were rite on his ass and he over did something and flipped......those were the fun days!!!!!!!!!!
when everything is under control, you are going too slow!!!!!
Does anybody remember the Yellow Ford truck from Canada that used to race at Riverside, it was called The Canadian Hoonker, it front end was higher than the rear end back in the 80's.
Here are a few of my family's photos from that race. Class 3 & 4.

I recall JD Brand as well. They were a team of about 7 or 8 vehicles, a class 8, class 3, class 1....heck, I don't remember them all, I do remember trying to strike up a conversation with one of their team mechanics who was working on a 4x4 jeep pickup if I recall correctly. He wasn't too friendly when I started asking probing questions about how much money was invested in the team (helicopters and all)....I guess I was a little pushy back in my early twenties! Apparently not long after some legal action forced the disbanding of the team...don't know any specifics...

How about those huge water-ballon launchers ? Guys would tie some sort of surgical rubber to the bumpers of two trucks, and like a sling-shot, would try to sail a water ballon 300' across the race-track, to the crazies, on the other side. And then there were the people who would jump the fence, and follow behind the water trucks getting soaked. Riverside in August was typically in the 100 degree range, and lots of antics, (and bare skin) by the 100,000 partiers in attendance. Oh, and did I mention all the free-flowing beer ?
Old school is awesome!!!!!!!!! I love the pictures of those old trucks!!!![]()
"DRUGS" was the money behind JD Brand, I remember they were around for that Riverside, and I think they were gone a few months later at the Baja 1000. They had one hell of a shop in el cajon where they hosted a drawing for 1 race that I cant remember. I remember walking around their shop and thinking to myself how much money they had and they spared nothing. I was really nieve then, I would never have dreamed it was because of illegal doings that all that existed. I was more than a little suprised when I herd it was because of drugs. I dont remember what happend to the main guy behind JD Brand, but for a while, he lived the life of royalty.
