Absolute HIGH FIVE to SCORE for the Jumbotron. The camera angles were great. You could watch 2-3 places on the course AND the infield. Everybody that went to Laughlin should sent Sal an note telling him we want it again next year. Also, we racers and spectators should commit to spending an extra $10 or so just to make sure SCORE does it again. Pre sell tickets, bump the entry fee, have the hotels include the extra $ in the cost of the room...or ?

theres definetly a good and bad side to this. GOOD SIDE: It's totaly convenient, modern, and more mainstream to see the parts of the race that you cant normally see. I was in the pits area most of the time and didnt really get to see the jumbo tron much, but im sure for the spectators in the stands it was great. the people racing in this sport definetly need more sponsorship...and things like a jumbotron and more modern spectator sport advances are a step in the right direction for that. BAD SIDE: remember when freestyle motocross meant going to the desert and watching local pro racers do big jumps? yeah..that was before the xgames and how popular that sport got. i honestly had alot more fun when that sport was small and fun. the more corporate sponsorship you have...the bigger the difference between spectator and racer. sure....we get to watch more on tv...the guys winning the trophy truck class get a bigger payoff...but your also looking at all the same type of things that happened to other smaller racing and offroad sports that hit big. youll see more pavement pounders with white fenders and fabtech kits, which..if your selling fenders or kits...is a good thing i guess. i dont know..i guess i just dont want to see our sport turn into a trend. a fad, i know the jumbotron is only a small piece of it all...but the commercializition of a sport starts with things like that...and although most will probably disagree with me, i know that most people whove been around awhile liked it better when you were the only guy in hs who had pieces of tubing on your truck and people looked at your prerunner like it was from outer space, whereas now you can go to the mall and count about 20 trucks in the parking lot with 3" wider kits and bypass's on the front.
Sounds like the Jumbotron was a hit. Mike, I am going to have to respectfully disagree with your comparing 4-wheeled desert racing to the freestyle MX popularity. Freestyle MX has only been around since the early/mid nineties. Yeah riders were jumping cliffs and big jumps before but not with the "tricks" that are performed today (which is what the public likes to see). The reason it has gone "mainstream" is because you can set the big gaps up in an arena, stadium, cowboy corral, and have people pay $ to watch them do tricks and move the venue to the next arena in a weeks time. Furthermore, there is only one class (run what ya brung) of competition in freestyle. Here, there are many, many, many different classes that have been around for ages. Plus, they can't run a desert race in an arena.
I know what your saying about the It is a great feeling to sit on a hill and watch a race. But what about the racers who struggle with funding but have the same passion as you do for the "nostalgic" aspect of the sport? We aren't losing this fun part of our sport because of "commericialization". This sport hasn't been commercialized in years.
You also mention the "20 prerunner trucks" in the mall parking lot. Why is this a bad thing? If you are a fab guy, wouldn't you want their business to make their "pieces of tubing"? I know there are other people on this board that would. So what if they are just pavement pounders, they are still giving someone business. I have heard many times where a "lift kit" company like Fabtech is bashed for their "just a lift" kit on this board. So what, if that isn't what you want or want to sell, don't buy it or sell it. It is called the "American Drean". We, as Americans, have the right to sell these products and to make a living doing it. Sometimes I think people are jealous of what they don't have (I am not implying this to you, just my two cents on this topic) and take it out on other people who have these kits or make these kits and are successful. It is very natural things. Hell, I am a school teacher and dream everyday about having things that I know I will never have...unless I get that Lotto tonight.

I am going to have to go wiht ESB4130 on this one. Yea it is cool to have a tv and be able to see what you cant and wouldnt be able to see on from one position. unfortunately it does sort of lead to a trend like he was saying cuz as it is right now everywhere i go i see a ranger or toyota wiht glass and a fabtech lift. but whatever ya know. it is good for the sport and bad for it.take it how you want it.
I doubt we'll ever see "Sal-Vision" at any Mexico races. Not to mainstream.
I for one would love to watch the San Felipe 250 from the comfortable surroundings of Bar Miramar. Ice cold cerveza, fresh fish tacos just outside the door, and a place for the ladies to go pee.
My own taste for the hops is very powerful, and I had no intention of spending a beerless weekend...
oh i agree, there are definetly good things that the jumbotron and bigger corporate sponsors can do for us, and im not gonna complain about selling more kits. the good part about it was the first thing i mentioned. but with the increased popularity, were almost gaurenteed for it to become even more of a trend than it is now. true, its good for business, but the down side is the loss of some of the appeal that truck racing has, at least for me. so there are totally definet good points to it, and im looking forward to that in many ways...but i'll definetly miss people looking at my truck like it was something theyd never seen before....when now its just another drop in the ocean of prerunners.
one things for sure though...if the sports gonna get bigger...theyd BETTER get some more footage of it on Speed channel, i dont think i can handle much more nascar.
Yeah, about a year and a half ago I would watch Speed Channel and they had desert races on. I only saw two and I believe they were the 2001 SCORE Primm 300 and the 2001 BITD Tonapah 300. In the SCORE race I remember them covering Troy Herbst in the truggy and I can't remember who else. In the BITD race they covered Damon Jefferies in his TT, Kyle Taylor in class 8, and another truck in stock class. It would be an hour or half hour show ( can't remember) and they would cover three different teams in all different classes. It was awesome, why don't they do that anymore?
