Here is an entertaining video of the Pro Trucks practicing on the middle section of Pikes Peak, in the days before the race. Some explanation is in order: The course is divided into three sections, bottom, middle, and top, for the practice sessions - each vehicle class gets one morning on each section. This video is from the middle section, which is mostly paved. The course is approx. half pavement, half gravel. The vehicles get to run as much as they can from 5am to 9am.
The funky old cars shown are an invited class, from the Panamerican Rally (originally run from 1950-1954,through Mexico, to promote the newly buit Panamerican Highway). The race was stopped in 1954 due to serious accidents, and then was resumed in the late 80s. These cars look like old dogs, but they are pretty tricked out under their bodies. High altitude robs the cars of much of their power. This video was shot at the end of the middle section, Devil's Playground, at 12.800 ft. When it snows on raceday, the finish line may have to be moved down to this point.
Oh, one other thing - there happen to be guardrails at the corners I shot, but most of the course has no guardrails and one can easily go over a giant cliff or into the trees. This race is scary if you have a fast vehicle. It is dangerous - the ambulance was fairly busy during practice and raceday.
