    Building a portable mister kit.

ok.. actually, I already built it, its rad, but it could get much better. I didnt put this in the SHOP section because its all off road related, and this well.. can be used anywhere.

I bought a Quick Shade canopy (like an EZ up) and a couple 10 foot 5 nozzle mister kits, attached them to the canopy after it was up and hooked up the hose to a new pesticide sprayer. It worked pretty good at Elsinore on Sunday. ALMOST had a full blown mist goin.. just nottttt quite enough pressure (so close) from the sprayer (i think they relieve pressure at about 35-40psi). It kept us way cool, it was like we had our own little rain cloud over us at the track.

Anyways, I need to build up about 15-20 more PSI and add about 3 more gallons of water. the sprayer is only a 2 GA unit and it lasted a total run time of about an hour. This was only with the 1 five mister kit going. perfect for 10 minute cool downs here and there between rides.

I'm brain storming for ideas to pressurize a small water tank, any thoughts? Ive pondered so far, a small 12v water pump (45-50psi) but I dont want it to run the entire time were misting. I though about a CO2 bottle with regulator (overkill?) and I thought about just a regular air pump charging up an accumulator tank. (this seems about right, just bulky).

If I go with an accumulator tank, do you think it will hold pressure for a good 20-30 minute run? or should I just go with a CO2 bottle and be done with it?

Biggest problem I've seen with these at a desert race is the mister nozzles getting clogged by the dust. Constantly having to clean them out. We had a 50 Gal. drum of water, but I can't remember what type of pump they had set up.

nah.. doesnt work fast enough.. and fills the truck with dirt..

Thanks for the input Pete.. I have a filter kit to keep in the water elements out from the inside, never though about the dirt.. hopefully having them up under the canopy will help a little.

Loomis, Cool idea. I would just bring more water. Cheaper, less headache. Sounds like it gets the job done as is. And once you start modifying things the more problems you end up having.

i like the idea of pressurizing something with a nitrogern or co2 tank then. sure seems like alot of extra stuff to drag to the track though.

FFRANCISS the fabulous 9 car dude, had a trick set-up this weekend in Barstow. They had a big drum of water and was using an 12v RV water pump running off of a battery in their pit trailer. I will be building one as I allready have most of the stuff.

Re: Building a portable mister kit.

My plumber buddy built one like ten years ago that we still use today. He got a huge 8" piece of pvc drain pipe and then reduced it down to two 1/4 npt female threads and put a paintball gun c02 tank receiver on one end and the mister hose with a ball valve on the other end. one of the ends woudl completly unscrew to pour water in.The thng was about 8 feet long. he would then tilt it at an angle so all the water would get pushed out the bottom end fitting. He would then get a co2 tank with a regulator and sert it to 80psi, put about 15 gallons of water in it, screw that co2 tank on open the ball valve and we had water for about an hour straight with no messing with it untill you have to refill it.

Re: Building a portable mister kit.

Wilson is right. Don't over think this thing.

My fiend has one on his pontoon boat that works off a inline switch and plugs into a cigarette lighter. He used a ballast pump like wake board boats use to fill up weight sacks. He runs water straight outta the lake thru a filter like you say you have with no problems. (he does have a piece of screen ziptied over the intake hose). He says he takes it camping and just uses 5 gal army water jugs because they are easy to transport. You probably wanna get a long power wire so you dont have to be right right next to the truck to use it. I am gonna make one of these someday.

In AZ everyone has a mister system and I am no exception. Usually if you run the home depot inline filter things will be ok and when the nozzles clog it is because of corosion. Bring spare nozels. Usually a clogged one can be fixed with a little scratching on it. A sharp tack works well .The beauty part is, it can work with any type of water supply and requires you to pressurize nothing. when you are done it all fits in a duffel bag.

    Thanks for the input guys..

originally thats what I was gonna do.. just hook it up to a Flojet or Shurflo 12v water pump. I just am worried about the pump draining down my truck battery at the motocross track.

I guess the pesticide sprayer isnt so bad afterall lol.
