Re: Building a portable mister kit.
Go to either of the big guys hardware stores (actually you'll probably have to go to both since they won't have exactly what you need) and pick up a hand spray from the garden section. we go through 3-4 of them a season but there only six bucks!
No Pumps
No hoses
No power and there portable.

Re: Building a portable mister kit.
Chris Wilson has an awesome set up. We used it at last years terribles cup and it was a life saver. I might not get this completely right but it is close.
CO2 tank (used for soda fountain) had water in it. Only a gallon at most. A second C02 tank (industrial, what we use for tire changes etc.) plumbed into the water holding C02 tank with regulator. I think both tanks were 50s. A line out to the misters. It was extremely efficient. It would use that gallon for a couple hours before we had to refill it and the whole system is sealed so no problem in the dirt. A true masterpiece!

Re: Building a portable mister kit.
simple is better, i've been using a tomato sprayer for about 4 years and never had any problem(set it up just like you described), last year I got smart and tried to go to 55 gal poly drum but is was a big mess, the poly drum needs so much pressure to force the water into the line it would expand to an unsafe size....I want to try and use a 30 gal drum w/ a 12v marine sump...that will be my next attempt but man power at the desert is always the easiest, as long as the water tank is kept clean you should not have to clean the nozzels

Re: Building a portable mister kit.
I would consider a 12v pump and a small photovoltaic for power.
