Re: SamCo Fabrication Vortec 7200 Build
Spacer is 4130, not heat treated. Most of the ones I have seen are also not heat treated. The spacers are not deforming, and neither is the bearings. How much torque can a mild steel grand national lock nut take... who knows, but with the aluminum sockets that some guys have not much before you encounter problems. I have a Sandy Cone socket, it is steel and nice, and I know a lot of guys hit them with an impact wrench pretty good.
Welding is obviously common, but if you want to disassemble, re grease and inspect for a quick prep you introduce grinder debris in the grease/ oil, and you waste time with a file fixing threads. Have a lot of builders been welding spindle nuts for years...yes. Are there better ways, yes. For example, Chrisman housings came for years with right hand threads on both spindles, and welded nuts. It worked, but builders improved on this with better lock rings, and left and right hand spindle threads
This is a commonly avalable designed solution that is beefier than the Cone, Tubeworks and Pro Am ones that are currently available. They will not clear all of the drive plates out there so beware of the allen screw to drive flange clearance.

Over 1000ftlb's......... Your spacer should be the same wall thickness as the lip on the inner race. Heat treated and ground parallel is also nice.........

I've often welded a "bridge" between the end of the spindle and the nut - it does no damage to the spindle or the threads, works great and is easy to remove and they don't come loose!

Until some dipchit decides to tack the nut first with the ground on the housing arcing through the threads and set up up for 3 hours of fun to remove the now frozen nut and repair he mistake. I know a lot of people do it this way, but it has always struck Me as a really poor idea.
