Know how they do what? Make the trail, or put the trail on Google Earth?
Last year BITD put the GPS trail on the website about a week before the race.

Yes to both, sorry for the generallity of the question. I would like to make my own trails out in the desert and then put them on google earth. Thanks.
Mostley was looking to see when it would be up for the race, if BITD deos it a week before the race then that is what I am looking for. Thanks again

To make a trail, go to My Trails on the Lowrance GPS and select New Trail. Change the max number or waypoints to 9999 so you don't run out of "bread crumbs." When you're done prerunning, go to GPS setup/transfer my data/save. Now your trail and any icons/waypoints are saved on the SD card, which you can take out of the unit. Its always a good idea before you start a serious prerun to erase all previous trails and waypoints and icons so you have a clean file when you save it, otherwise all that earlier data will be included in your save.
Using a card reader, plug the SD card into your computer. You can use a number or programs to convert the data to a google earth file. I like GPS Babel, its free, do a search for it. Couldn't be simpler to use, just tell it what file you want to convert, and tell it what kind of file you want to convert it to. In this instance you will convert your .usr file that you just saved to a .kmz file for Google Earth. Once it converts to .kmz, just click on it and google earth will open and show you your data.
Initially it will look like a mess because every breadcrumb you dropped on the trail will show up on the screen. Go to the sidebar and expand the selections, you will see 'Tracks' and under that you will see 'Points' and 'Path'. Deselect 'points', those are the breadcrumbs. Keep 'path' selected, that is the line on the screen.
Here is a .zip file of the course that I have:

No sweat! I'm just sitting here enjoying my two measly rep points.
