We own a business, run a race team, Dan a high School diploma, I have Diploma and some college.
But have graduated from the school of hard knocks that only owning your own business can bring.

    Re: Are you Edumacated?

My brother and I own a business together. He has a degree in graphic design, I just have H.S.
We have 15 employees, and have had 100% growth in each of the last 2 years.
Funny, but on average it seems people that go to college work for people who didn't. Atleast with the small to medium sized companies.

    Re: Are you Edumacated?

Just started a low voltage contracting company in May. I have an AS degree in Management Information Systems and skipped through highschool with mediocre grades. Both my parents have owned bussinesses 90% of their working lives. ( my dad is a low voltage contractor too) I have no formal business training but what I learned from my folks and the moral of 100% honesty in this business. I have two employees, just leased a shop two weeks ago and so far with my current contracts and pricing agreements I am projected to do $1.1mil gross for 2008. ....and im 24.

    Re: Are you Edumacated?

I was in many AP classes in HS and graduated with Honors and certificates in Industrial Education (Auto Shop) and Electrical Engineering. I went through ITTs two-year Electrical Engineering program and earned an AS EET degree. But I am a non-practicing electrical engineer... I was installing Car Audio systems throughout HS and part time while attending ITT and went to full time following my graduation. I enjoyed it and the money was as good as the entry level engineering positions I was being offered. I worked for several shops and eventually ended up working for Orion Industries during their prime...

I then went to work for Car Stereo Review magazine then Car Audio and Electronics magazine then into marketing, product management, project management and technical management all the while doing freelance writing and photography from time to time... I took my current position as an Editor with Buckaroo Communications almost 2 years ago and I must say that 95% of the time I really enjoy my job!!!

Funny thing is that I have never had formal journalism or photography training! So yes I have a degree but it is not in the field I work in and I rarely use it.

    Re: Are you Edumacated?

barely graduated from helix high school in la mesa, ca a long, long ,long time ago. i worked at my dad's ford dealership when i was old enough to drive. enrolled at grossmont college for some business courses, but dropped out because at the time, i wanted to have as much fun as i could before i was "strongly encouraged" to continue my "education" by the army at the tank school at fort knox, ky. i got out of the army, did'nt like the car business very much and decided to learn finish carpentry. i worked all over the lower 48 building restuarants for chart house and other restaurant outfits. hung doors and set trim in san diego for different builders. now, my folks are gone and my sister and i don't have the dealership, but own the leases and manage the property it sits on in kearny mesa. that income now allows for me to go racing in a limited way. our team races only score mexican races in sportsman truck with plans to race some code and possibly some record races down south in the future. and borrowing a quote from my friend randy schultz, "we may be bad, but we're slow". but , whether you have formal education or not, never be afraid to add to what you know. you don't need school for that. life in general will provide the education.
