99 cr250
just got given a cr250 (99), all there, but the rod bearing is bad. is this something i could do?? any ideas what a shop would cost?? motors out of the bike, and the top end is off

You have a perfect opprtunity to learn how to rebuild an engine.
purchase the service manual book and start tearing that thing apart.
you will have to get the crank pressed apart and together properly to be balanced. I'd take it to a machine shop or mechanic that has experience doing just that.. last time I had my XR650R done.. it cost about $90 in labor.
besides that.. you should be able to repair the bike yourself.. I'd also look into replacing the crank bearings and seal as you will have the case apart anyways.. That will give the bike some extra life...
Just take you time and double check yourself. a lot of info on the net to get info from.
