Whelchel back on top for round 11 cv
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
WHELCHEL - CHM TOP PODIUM in PRO2 - Round 11 on Saturday: "To Slay a monkey"
Pre-race practice and qualifying on Friday saw Whelchel in very relaxed and focused mood stating to the team about the truck "Don't touch it, it's right where I want it, don't change a thing"
While Team CHM has managed through the sometimes difficult growing pains of a completely new race program the team has gelled into a solid performance vehicle which showed it's real colors on Saturday September 13 in San Diego California.
Jerry Whelchel topped out the podium on Saturday in Round 11 essentially "slaying a monkey" that had seemingly hitched a ride to overcome and take a first place finish in the CORR series Round 11.
"It's been a long time coming, I finally have that first win behind me this season, it's a huge relief" said Whelchel to the LIVE Speed Channel audience and roaring fans of the sold out event this past weekend. "My confidence in the Team and New Truck is huge right now and just where I want it to be."
Saturday's race saw an inversion for once very favorable to the PRO2 champion putting Whelchel on the pole for the start of Saturdays race.
Immediately at the start a very impressive salvo of live rounds were fired accross the CHM deck by Greg Adler in his 4Wheel Parts Ford pulling the hole shot and running strong all the way thru turn 3. Whelchel drew deep on nerve and experience reeling Adler in off the Skyjump in an air-time drag race to turn 4 where Whelchel dug hard and slid under to capture the lead.
Adler continued to hold strong in second and challenge until a slip put him back into the lions mouth where all hell was breaking loose trying to catch the now 4 second lead of Whelchel.
The Moto boyz Johnson and McGrath were back banging bars while picking apart the inexperienced and drawing lines normally only seen on two wheels. Over the mic Whelchel received info from his spotter to "stay calm" and run your line its working, this is your race...
The mandatory yellow saw "you guessed it" Mr. Renezeder (CR) growling in the not so distant rear view mirror now into 3rd behind Adler. It was shaping up to be a replay from round 7 only six weeks prior. Green flag racing again as CR squares up and passes under Adler in turn 3 now into second while Whelchel is running the tires off out front keeping his line clean and consistent. A creative CR now unleashes every weapon he has running on his home practice track trying to dislodge Whelchel from sitting on the peak. A brief and momentary CR eclipse exiting turn 3 and entering the "no touch zone" before the skyjump has Whelchel back out front mid air.
White flag brings out CR's entire toolbox for the last lap but to no avail as Whelchel takes home his first VICTORY for Team CHM ringing in a cover story in Sunday's San Diego Tribune Sports section.
SUNDAY ROUND 12
Starting outside second row Whelchel runs hard until it breaks...
The Yin and Yang: Sunday round 12 ends in an anti climactic "That's Racing" episode of a broken upper control arm on lap 8. Whelchel exits the track while running in 3rd on the mandatory yellow caution lap for inspection and takes a path of prudence to save the truck. Round 12 began strong for Whelchel running behind Johnny Greaves and CR who started on the pole, Whelchel was making a play for another podium to cap off what was already a phenomenal racing weekend for Team CHM when the breakage occurred. Not totally sure of where "the break" occurred the team took it to experience and rolled up their sleeves in preparation for another long weekend of racing action in two weeks in the BITD series at the Bilek Silver State 300 in Mesquite Nevada. Team CHM currently sits in second position running the #40 Geiser Bros. TT in the Best in the Desert series with Owner Chet Huffman at the helm after three races, including winning the 2008 Parker 425.
