Need some Quad buying advice
Hi:
well it's been 2 months since we have been in Yuma now and we are now thinking about buying quads..
We are avid jetskiers, but with the winter coming, we are looking for some other fun
what are trail type places around the yuma to go to? are there any off road parks?
forgive me for sounding nieve, we come from the north east where using atv's was pretty much a no-no
we aren't sure if we want to buy new or used
if new, was thinking about something like honda trx300 or 250 for her or the wolverine 350 4wd model, something that is automatic or clutchless
a quad racer 450 for me, or the yz450f quad
i'm not sure if we want to go to the realy sandy areas, like the dunes. the one main problem we have is she suffers from asthma, so i am thinking the dust in the sand area may not be so good. that is why i was asking if there are trail type places
are quads like these i mentioned good? how long do they last, like motor wise before needing rebuilds?
someone wants to sell a 06 yzf450 for 5k, is that alot or reasonable?
could a trx250 type of model support either of us? i am 245#'s, 6' tall, she is alot smaller 5'2" about 125#'s
we aren't loking to get wild like racing or anything, just out to have some rec type of fun.
I have even thought about getting a yz250 dirtbike, not sure how 2 wheelers are around here
we did some quad riding at PAragon park in PA, which is trail type riding through the mountains and the NJ offroad park in the pine barrons area, which was various track types (thats where i used the quadracer and she has the TRX250 i believe)
thanks for any help, again just trying to do some research before we hit the dealers..

Re: Need some Quad buying advice
If your new to the desert, your in an area that has alot of different type of terrain. From really sandy to rocky. If you planning on going to Glamis with the kids and wife, that would mean a different set up than the rocky terrain. I think the YFZ or any other 450 quad would work for you. The wife would probably enjoy a quad with reverse and electric start and no clutch. You would know better what she likes though. Should maybe rent some quads and go check those places out before you buy. Good luck. Welcome to the off road community. People are very cool here.
Where in PA are you from? My wife is from New Freedom.

Stay on two wheels you will be happier in the end. There are plenty of good deals on 250 two strokes floating around.

If your going for a quad, I would 2nd the yfz450. I had an 05 & loved that thing. Wife would only let me have one toy so i chose the dirtbike.

Bert's Mega Mall is selling 2008 Outlaw 525's (KTM motor...very fast) for $4999. The thing is faster than a Raptor 700.

I highly recommend buying from Bert's! Got my 08 Raptor SE$ ($6800 otd) and an 07 Predator TLE ($4800 otd). Ask for Zarli she really hooks it up!
They also have good deals on almost everything as they are one of the largest dealers in CA!
Taking Marc's (Vtr) advice and renting before you buy is a great idea so you can kinda get a test ride before dropping the $$$.

I wouldn't recommend the Suzuki 450 for trail riding. It comes with very small tires and very low ground clearance. You will beat the bottom of the quad up without adding a skidplate and larger tires. It sounds like you just want something to cruise around and be comfortable on.
For trail riding I think you would be happy with a Honda 300 or 400ex. Nice smooth suspension and easy power for cruising around on trails. I rode a 300ex all last year and had a blast trail riding it. Super simple upkeep also.

you're kind of limited on the trail locations for riding around yuma. even away from the dunes you'll find yourself picking up a lot of dust. like at jack rabbitt for instance. there just isn't enough rocks and hard clay around the sonora desert for the types of trails you're looking for, if i'm reading your ambitions correctly.

Re: Need some Quad buying advice
Thanks so much for the info
Zet... in a way i think you have nailed what we are looking for and i do believe it will be extremly limited for the type of riding we are looking at
also i do recall that quad racer being low to the ground, didn't think of that
jetrentals in yuma rents the quads for 200/day
maybe we will just do that
they offered guided tours, but they wanted big $$ for that
i definately don't want to wander around out there without someone having knowledge or the terrain (just like when we jetski)
I even eyed a few of the sand buggie type cars (like the rail jobs)
just looks super cool to drive in
i'm game for anything and she is too, but i have to keep any eye out for things that will trigger her asthma off or set her off. i know there are masks she can use, so that may be an option for riding too
where is this Mega Mall? in Yuma?

Bert's Mega Mall is in Covina California. It is a bit of a hike for you, but I wanted to let you know the killer deal they are offering on a brand new Outlaw. Have you considered a RZR or other UTV?
