Re: 1994 Ranger Back half
if so.. then yes...i gutted out the rear end and mig welding it on both sides... mad sure it penetrated the metal. i am going to brace the bottom of the rear end with a tube and gusset the top so i don't have to worry about it as much. haha
thank you for the feedback

Re: 1994 Ranger Back half
Truck great and good job on the build.
Everyone’s right.
For sure brace the hell out of the upper link tabs by landing on the housing tubs. A little side load will rip them right off if you don’t.
Thanks for sharing.

ya.. i am going to do something on it before i take it out again...
i am going to end up buying your weld-it-yourself back brace and four link tabs soon.. i am just trying to find a cheap complete stock 9'' rear end i can build off of.
thank you for the feedback!

If you are using a junk yard 9”, the key here is to save money. The only way it makes sense is, you use a pre-79 F-100 and only do gears and traction. This axle is a 5on5.5 lug pattern and is good if you’re plane on upgrading the front to match this lug pattern. If you build the 58” car housing that come with the 5on4.5 and 28 spline axles then you spend money to switch those axles and have to put way to much time in to cutting and grinding all the 5 link mounts and coil buckets off for a week, witch I would trade all that time and just buy an after market housing for $350.
If you switch to disc. Brakes on the F-100 setup, you have to make new axels because the back space is different on the stock axles and then you also have to cut the bearing end cap off the housing and weld on a new one that will mate with the right bearing size to work with the new dics. brakes. After doing all this you could have paid for a Giant Motorsports “Pre-run series complete axle” that comes with much better parts, truss and 4-link mounts, extra heavy duty housing, and is all brand new.
Here is a brake down that will help.
Junk yard 9”, if you ok with 5on5.5
$200.-500. Junk 9”
$275. Gears
$300. Spool
$150. Installed
$450. Weld It Your self truss & 4-link mounts
Plus all your labor and running around
$1675. Total. Will be more with a locker
If you can stick to this combo then it makes since and you save.
Junk yard 9” with all the changes
$200.-500. Junk 9”
$275. Gears
$300. Spool
$150. Installed
$450. New axles for 5on4.5
$500. Disc. brakes
$250. Cut & weld on new end caps
$450. Weld It Your self truss & 4-link mounts
Plus all your labor and running around
$2875. Total
If you have to do all this to a junk housing then you lose and you still have junk yard housing.
Giant’s axle everything new, V-cut H.D. housing with 3.25x.250 D.O.M. tubes,
any width, any lug pattern and any gear size
$2765. With truss & 4-link mounts all ready welded on.
For $110. less you get a much better axle and you don’t have to get dirt cutting, grinding and have the smell of burnt gear oil after you do all the welding to the truss and mounts.
I hope this helps, I’m just trying to make you aware of the things needed to these setups.

Re: 1994 Ranger Back half
i see where your comming from. i know that if you want it to last you need to buy better parts, my plan.. haha, is to be able to buy your giant motorsports complete rear end, but.. its just not in my salary because im still in school. so that is why i want to go on the path of buying a cheap 9'' with gears and axles and then buying the truss kit, because that i could probably be able to do..
i found 9'' rear end out of a 78 ranchero with 5/4.5 lug pattern for a ranger and it has the axles and third member and drums. they guy is asking 400 for it. im sure its going need a rebuild on all of the seals but im going to gut it all out anyways to weld on the back brace...and all of the link tabs
what do you think about that...

Re: 1994 Ranger Back half
Like I said, the only way to go on a budget is an F-100 that has 31 spline axles, the car ones are 28 spline that breaks shortly after you install a locker or a spool.
The 1980 F-100 made an axle for a couple of months that had a 5on4.5 lug pattern that would be great for your setup but it is very hard to find, maybe if you have been doing good, you may luck out and find one.
