    Re: Phase converters?

You could use a Varible Frequincy Drive (VFD). Under $300 and will covert 1ph to 3ph and also give you speed control, not that you need speed control. Here is a link to one I am looking @ getting for a small Mill I am getting going : http://www.driveswarehouse.com/Drive...0-022NFU1.html

FYI: VFD's do make a hi picth humm. I use a Mill @ school that has one and the only time I hear it is when the machine is on but not cutting. Once I start cutting I don't even hear it.

    Re: Phase converters?

Depending on the current draw of your sander the rotary should work. Try this:

I have used both rotary and static phase converters in the past. Both can work well.

Should be a green screw inside for the ground.

    Re: Phase converters?

the diagram is excellent, you can use a 3-pole switch or circuit breaker. using the phase-amatic you took out the hard part.

for those that don't want to spend the money on a rotary converter its easy to use a static converter($100) then any 3-ph electric motor to add the benefits of the rotary converter. just make sure the HP of the static and motor exceed the items you plan to run at the same time.

    Re: Phase converters?

Rory you should also have 3 wires coming out of the motor.

If this is the case then just wire them to the three coming from the phase converter. If the motor spins backwards try swapping 2 of the wires.

    Re: Phase converters?

I picked up my three pole switch this afternoon and i all my plugs. There is three wires coming out of the converter, no ground. the diagram is pretty straightforward my last question is it shows the T-1 and T-2 lines joining up after the switch, can i hook them up at the switch? if that question makes any sense?
Thanks for all the input wiring has me scratching my head even at how simple it is. thank you Rick, Ross, and everyone else.

    Re: Phase converters?

here is what i have gotten done so far, called phase a matic and figured out about the ground in the unit. i have a question about the plugs that I am using I know which blade gets the ground (GRN) wire but the other three I dont, does it matter which wire goes to which blade in the plug? I have black, white, and red i have attched some pics. thanks again.

Got one out of four figured out
