Yesterday at a Massive Inc. showcase, Activison Blizzard has officially announced the development of their next Call of Duty game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
No details of the game were released at the event itself, just that it will be released in fall 2009. Since the Call of Duty series are developed by Infinity Ward and Treyarch, there is a big chance one of these two will be the developers of this new instalment. The move itself was expected, as Activision Blizzard are making it into a habit to release a Call of Duty title every year, but it will probably be a surprise for many that they will build on COD4:MW, instead of opting for a completely new title, set in space which is what many people were expecting. Details will probably be released soon.
How this news is going to influence an already split community is unknown at the time, but it surely will have a positive effect to add another game in the equation. Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: MW or Call of Duty: WAW and now all of the sudden Call of Duty: MW2 is going to play a part in all of this.
On the other hand, this could also unify the community, if 'COD6' turns out to be a great competitive game (preferably developed by Infinity Ward), people will have no difficulty leaving the older titles behind all move as an unified community towards COD6, bringing the game to the level Call of Duty 4 was at its prime and hopefully even further with the right support of organizations, developers, players and modders.
Because I was curious about how some of the 'top' players and managers were thinking about the new game, I caught up with a few of them to ask them about their opinion for the new game:
Thorpy, player of DOK gaming:
Sounds good to be fair, I know they keep releasing game after game but the Modern Era is really well portrayed by Infinity Ward. It's a far better choice over another WW2 game!
bAC, ZeroPoint.COD4 player:
Well, with cod5 being kinda dire, I’ll be playing cod4 for quite some time with UK EPS as it provides the money and competition that every gamer wants. I’m sure the next cod title should be a lot better than cod5, but it has some big boots to fill with cod4 being as good as it was. when it first came out, I was amazed at how much better it was than dod (the game I was playing at the time) so I guess you could say I'm glad theres going to be something to look forward to in the future, being that im 23 now, I haven’t got long left anyway smile.gif
Dudek, oXmose.COD4 player:
I think if it is as good as cod4 with better game play and some better stuff it will bring a new challenge and maybe attract even more people, but I will have to try it first.
discodance, Vicious and Evil player:
My opinion is split. It can be negative if the CoD4 community picks up again. But I think most people grow tired of a game after playing it for two years, so perhaps the community will appreciate the game. I also think the modern setting is more appropriate for an esportsgame.
Morg, Dignitas.COD4 manager:
No idea, just wait to see what its like
Bocerbo, LowLandLions manager and former top player:
Call of Duty World at War might have potential for something decent, but my general feel when playing the game was that it somehow did not feel like a PC-designed game, the guns reacted too slowly and especially the sniper filled me with rejection. Ryan Palmer's work on the game is quite necessary, but how well his ideas will transfer into code is yet undetermined, I do hope he manages to make it somewhat successful.
