Trans help

My 4R70W in my 02 F150 won't go into Drive, 2nd or 1st. The lever on the column will switch into those gears but the truck won't physically go into the gear. The RPM'S change like the truck wants to shift but it never quite shifts. It will go into reverse. I was out yesterday and on the way back it started not wanting to accelerate in gear once I would come to a stop until finally it won't go into gear anymore. I was able to get home and in my garage luckily.

Anyone have any thoughts on what could be wrong? I am hoping for something simple like a bad solenoid but I am thinking its internal.

There is a switch on the trans shift lever on the side of the transmission. Check that. It's external. They break quite easily.
