Re: New to dirt biking
Honestly, your best bet is the 125. It's cheaper to buy and maintain, and it a lot better tool to learn how to ride correctly. Also, the reduced weight(something close to like 20-30 pounds) makes the bike a lot more manageable. The added torque does make the bike easier to ride, but honestly tends to instill lazy habits in the rider. Learning to keep a 125 "on the pipe" is one of the best lessons for making a good rider.

Re: New to dirt biking
125 would be your best bet
easy to maintain
fun to ride
and 2-strokes pretty much means you cant be lazy
for 1500 try and find a rm 125 insted, those are pretty potent

Re: New to dirt biking
Getting a 125 would be a good learner if you plan on riding a lot of MX. You learn to keep corner speed up and use momentum to your advantage. ou'll also learn proper line choice so you don't lose that momentum. A 250F does have more torque, but a few more pounds as well.
Maintenance is about the same. Only problem is nowadays try and find some one at the local track with some premix or a spark plug for a 125.
How much do you weigh anyways? That could be a big factor in your decision too.
Don't bother me. I'm wasting potential.
Life's a grave, dig it.

Re: New to dirt biking
In your profile it says you have a CRF 230, why not stick with that?
But a 125 two stroke is far superior to a 250f. Especially if you are just riding for fun, the maintenance of the 250f will drive you to bankruptcy. You'll have more fun on the 125, and be a better rider for it. You'll probably outgrow the 250f faster than the 125.

Re: New to dirt biking
A 2 stroke is much different than a 4 stroke. Its not hard to keep running, but it wont just let you ride it at idle like a 4 stroke. I think my 125 is way more fun to ride than small bore 4 strokes.
As for that bike, there are better deals out there, that one looks kinda trashed. When you buy a used bike, plan on spending over $100 on basic maintence to get it back into good shape. Hell, I spent over $1,250 on my 125 after purchase, but then again it was a completley thrashed '84 I bought for $250.
Look for a bike owned by someone who races, Racers generally keep their machines in better condition than an average person.
Its a buyers market right now, cash talks. Look for all of the goodies that you will need to put on the bike, like a skid plate, hand guards, spark arrestor, etc. And be weary of bikes with metal mulish graphics...
