Engine Questions

Hi,
I'll start with my disclaimer. I'm not good at mechanic work so bare with me.
Here's my scenario followed by a couple of questions.
My baja bug was sitting (in Phoenix) for about 8 months. I managed to fix a shifter issue. After changing the oil and running it "in place", I took it for a spin up the block. The engine did not run well and seemed to be loading up with fuel. I thought I might as well change the plugs and ignition wires. Again started it up and a 1/2 block later, I could keep it running by revving the motor but it will die when I keep the throttle down or try to go in any gear including reverse. The old Zenith carb on it is wet around it too.

FINALLY my questions:
Could "old" gas be the cause of this?
Does the "wet" carb indicate some fixing?
Is it worth fixing the old carb?
What is a good replacement carb?

It's an older bug and the motor was detuned before I got it to run Mexican gas in it.

sounds like a stuck float/needle and seat assembly.could be a very easy fix.

Not really sure exactly what that is but it definitely gives me something to start with.
Would some Carb cleaner help with that issue?

Carb is probably varnished after 8 months sitting. Rebuild it, paying close attention to settings BEFORE you dismantle it. Carb cleaner may well just move the gunk around, plugging jets and passages. Friends have had good luck w/ Rod's Carburetors near 27th and McDowell, IIRC.

Sounds like your carb is in need of a rebuild, take it to a carb shop or VW engine builder, and have it rebuilt.
