1400 / 1450 9" R&P Suggestions
Looking to hear what the 1450 racers have been using for Ring & Pinion brands (Motive Gear, US Gear - Strange, Richmond, etc.) in your trucks and what kind of mileage / service interval are you getting.
Application is a Ford F-150 Extra Cab with 450 HP 40 Spline Desert Specialties assembly.
Positive constructive input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Mike

Not sure of brands because I have low horse power, but I know must the guy’s with over 500hp get 800-1000 dirt miles before the pinion gear goes.
And the lower gear sizes burn up faster, plus if you have horses power you can stay away from the lower gears.

Tom, how many races are you guys getting out of a R&P set? I've gone through 2 gears sets in 5 desert races, and remember we probably have less than 70 hp to the rear wheels. I'm starting to think it's a cheap brand of gears that are doing us in, so maybe a higher quality of gears, like what you run, would be better for us....

What brand and type have you been using.
Do you know if they are the 9310 or 8620 material. I have been told that the 9310 is better as it is more forgiving and has more resiliency.
Thanks!

Well, that's what is unclear....I bought the 3rd member from the Sierra Bros. I got a hell of a deal on it, but it is the second set of gears I have gone through (they replaced the first set free of charge). When I buy the new R&P set I will look for the 9310 material. Thanks for the advise!
By the way, I pulled the rearend apart tonight, all the teeth on the ring gear are chewed up bad, and there is a ton of backlash! Really surprised it lasted the last 3 laps at BAP!

Were using MOTIVE gears. Not sure what material. Havent got a good attempt at the service life as we've grenaded a case on the last time out. I purchase RP parts from Bill Thomas in San Bernardino and tell him its for a dezert vehicle. He is a good guy and very helpful. Heard he may not be in biz anymore?

We've had good luck with US gear. Richmond, not so good. One thing about US gear is that on the higher ratios, they tend to use a higher tooth count. I used a 6.00:1 and it was 36/6 with US and a 30/5 with Richmond.

Mike,
The brands worth running for a paying customer (read: don't get free gears) are: Visteon, US Gear, and Precision Gear. Visteon is the leading supplier for 'Cup teams due to their improved quality control.
Another thing pointed out by others, that is often overlooked is the tooth count/ shape.
Good luck!

Mike I was doing some research on this and started a thread about the Strange diffs. Motive sounds like the way to go. I think the 9310 is the one that is not as hard and will last longer in the dirt. The 8620 will last longer on the street. I am still not sure which one to use because when I take my truck on trips I am doing just as much street miles as dirt, if not more because I don't trailer my truck.
