    Re: The Real Class 6.....Cars!

Only class 6 I recognize. Since 1975 starting out in this sport in class 11 I had the privilege of getting to know a large amount of class 6 racers in staging for each and every race as we all had a long waite on race day before the start. Class 6 sedan class was ruined by Walker Evens racing which was a sad day when the class dried up. The Saabs were about as fast as a class 11, infact the whole class 6 was about as fast, Sure there were exceptions but for the most part class 11 was faster even when the 55 chevy came into the class. which had class 6 starting very last class several times. I had quite a few battles with a lot of the 6 cars, Arnie Gunnersons Saab in the late 70s and 80s and Frank Balls Datsun 5-10 in the 70s also. Arnie was one tuff guy to pass in a class 11 because he would not move over. Arnie would stay at the same campground in Ensenada as I did. His Saab 96 was very reliable and won many races against the large and hi HP V8 cars but when the factory got involved it was the catalyst for class 6es demise. A lot of you dont know there was a VW class 6L in the 70s that was full body bugs but kinda class 5ish under the shell. It was running when I started in 75 and was still around at the 1976 Baja 1000 but I think that was the end of 6L for Vw sedans. The real sedans were 6Wand Included Henry Arras Ford ranchero which was extremely fast in the 70s as well as Frits Croyers Oldsmobile Starfire. The Starfire was a real Beautiful car and very fast also but I know at the 1976 Baja 1000 which I think was its first race it did not reach Ojos Negros. In 1981-2 or 3(I cant remember exactly) at a mexically race there was over 25 class 6 cars at that one race, maybe even 30+..There was even a brand spanking new Vw shiraco that was 100 Percent stock all the way to the tires and wheels. There was not 1 single thing done to add performance and all it had was the bare minimum Score approved cage and seat belts and nets AND a 1/2 inch!!! skid plate up front. It raced that 1 and only time, and I dont think it got very far, but the guy later campaigned a Vw Rabbit with some success. I remember a Mustang that was about as much of a race car as that Shiraco, camaros, Louis Vantreese(I am sure I spelled that wrong) and her "FORDS FOREVER" Edsel, there was another Edsel from TJwana infact I trully believe that a lot in that large entry never raced there cars again. I was at teck and remember one very large sedan that was turned away because of the horrible welds on the cage and he came back the next day(RACE~DAY) and somebody had completely re welded the cage. I could swear it was a Cadillac Eldorado, like a 65 with at least a 500 ci motor with about 15 Cibie Super Oscars all over it. I remember a couple of Corvairs a Mustang 2, a AMC gremlin, Purple at that, the 2 AMC Pacers, Datsun 510s, a couple of them, a Capri, Saabs. How I wish I would have taken pictures. Sorry to ramble, Just have always been a fan and friend of class 6. I probably have more miles dicing with class 6 cars than anybody LOL, as big and powerfull as a lot of them were, they still would not run away from the front running 11 cars

    Re: The Real Class 6.....Cars!

There were a number of Gremlin's out of the "Baja 500 Off Road Shop" on eastern Colorado Bl. in Pasadena in the late 70's/early 80's; Anyone have a clue on them? They were the first real off road race cars I had ever seen and it got me hooked. The guy in the place told me about some sort of race near Barstow and I went in my squareback, since then the addiction has been strong and I have experienced that looonnnnggggg spiral down.

[QUOTE=offroadaction;888748]Here is a good question for you. Rod Hall raced Class 6 once...what race, what car, and how did he finish?

1971 Baja 500. Ford Maverick. First in production 2WD sedans.

    Re: The Real Class 6.....Cars!

Only 1 that I ever knew of Jeff, I think his name was John Prichord(I think) But I only ever saw 1 and the same one, never saw anymore. Makes me laugh, when I first met my wife she drove a gremlin that had the most intence speed wable after 50 MPH. Vehicles like the one above put the nail in the coffin of class 6, the Saab was the only one to win aginst some of these when they would break

    Re: The Real Class 6.....Cars!

It Was not class 6 when Rod hall raced the Mavric, but still cool anyway. How about Jim Fricker racing a Bronco and towing a camping trailer the whole way. Took him 19+ hours to finish the Baja 500 that would be about the same as a present day Baja 1000 loop race

My dad ,Hal graves used to race the ford mustang around 81-85 and before that the audi 100 around 78-81 or something close to that. In 1988 he upgraded to class 9 and that car is still racing-with him in it. He's 72 and says thats a real mans race car- I just think he's crazy. Frank ball who raced the Datsun 510's is a customer of mine and just sold his last 510,more or less stock. It's a small world !

Around 1980 there were a couple of Gremlins in the shop next to My dads in Vista CA. Pops being a VW guy naturally made fun of them all the time. They were bright green........

    Re: The Real Class 6.....Cars!

I remember the Gremlins being white/white cages. The progression of SUV's and the creativity of the Miller olds made some of the old iron or traditional class 6's like "Snotin Norton's" Nova & Schwachofer's '55 obsolete but it was the same thing kind of happened when the Ranchero's and El Camino's made their debute. For those in Parker there's a great pic at Foxes (Spencer Low's place) of his Nissan and the Spy Racing Ranchero getting tangled up. The rapid progression of this sport; the creativity of the builders and and flexability of the rules are both a blessing and it's biggest problem IMO. The costs skyrocket, hardware becomes "obsolete" and thus history is created...
