Ignition
Not being a Class 9 racer I'm not familiar with all of the specific rules for the class. What is a legal ign system and what is not ?
Are you limited to a points dist with points in it, or are electronics allowed ?

Re: Ignition
I ran a Compufire as well, My understanding is that any igntion system that is driven by the stock Dist, drive is allowed. that narrows our options too just a few systems on the market other than a stock dist and coil set-up... Rob S.

Re: Ignition
We run a stock distributor/coil system with a backup coil pre wired on the rear cage. My old man isn't a big fan of compufire and like systems because he doubts relibility. How reliable are they and does the increased charge help power all that much?

Re: Ignition
951- I ran a magnetic pick-up in an 009 in my cars and never had a problem. The next car will probably get a compufire or like system because they do help with power and spark across the RPM range. Just make sure you carry a complete back up distributor to throw in incase you have a computer failure. I never had one racing, but did have a comp failure in my manx and it sucked. About 180 miles from home and 30mph was the max speed. Atleast it still ran! Dual coils are a must.

Re: Ignition
We ran 14 races with our compufire without any trouble at all, I believe the car still has it on and has run several since. I did hear scott say that the mags on the pick-up disc desinigrated when he took the cap off so other than that it has been on the car for 4 years without a single failure. The coil pack give off something like a 60k.vlt spark so that is why you must increase the plug gap to .0050, we ran NGKs B-6HS set at .0048. We seem to always have super throttle response even in very cold weather, much more crisp than with a Dist/Coil.

Re: Ignition
7 years/seasons ( 2 championships) with (knocking on wood) ZERO problems. I would say they're somewhat reliable.

Re: Ignition
I asked because I have converted a 009, an 010, and am in-process (long term) of converting a 205 dual advance to Toyota mag pick-ups (& coil+'ignitor') and I wondered if such a thing would be legal. Sounds like it is. The conversion is $20 worth of JY parts, but it takes a couple hours to do.
Martin, where did you get a mag trigger for a 009 ? All I've ever seen is the Pertronix kit.
Beyond a point there isn't anything to be gained from a hotter ignition, but one that can jump a bigger gap more reliably seems like a good idea. I would venture there is a fine line btwn enough IGN capacity and using too much HP to drive needless IGN power. A careful balancing might result in some 'spare' HP.

Re: Ignition
Thom- I believe my first one was an Allison. I have had several pertronix as well. The Allison lasted the longest on the manx, which was driven daily, preran many races, and played in the sand a lot as well. In reality, the pick-up was small enough that you could easily carry a spare instead of another pointed distributor. There is another brand of magnetic pick-up outthere, I just can't remember the name. It is one that has been around for a long time, and they make aircraft landing lights as well. Just can't remember the name.

$293.24 Model DIS-IX Distributorless ignition system for 009 Distributor
I pasted that from compufire's site. Is that what everyone runs? And is that pretty much all inclusive for 300 bucks? It sounds like it's well worth the money. Thanks.
