December 19th, 2009 13:31 #1 Better coverage of Baja 1000, is it possible?
As usual I am disappointed with the coverage, every year the same.
While I appreciate that NBC covers the race at all, the inaccuracies and deliberate omissions in coverage are obvious and annoying to anyone who was there.
Until the coverage gets past this editorialized mess geared toward some mythical viewer and turns to simple reporting and timely, accurate race coverage there will be no legitimacy in our sport, particularly to any vehicle other than a TT or Open pro MC.
How can this be accomplished?
What about a co-op where each entry contibuted a "media fee" to cover some of the costs of covering the event.
Maybe each class should have a rep that does interviews and assembles info to use in the final product. This way the racers could have input regarding the content and style.
What really is missing are the great individual stories of both triumph and despair that make the Baja 1000 what it is.
If a complete show produced by racers could be delivered to the broadcast companies then maybe the result would be better and increased coverage.
With all of the great videographers, TV commentators and TV producers involved with the sport and with all of the footage that was shot why can't we produce a show (or series of shows) that will knock peoples socks off?
Just some ideas on how to improve things, what do you think?

i think it's run by folks who don't race, are just in it to make some money and sell ads and theres nothing we can do about it. how's that for a short answer.

if the coverage was any good, it would be a 4 hr. long movie.

Pony up the advertising money and it's all good.

my problem with the thing is that they don't have the time to go through all the other classes. most people who race don't have trophy trucks. i know folks like watching the fast guys. who doesn't? but it could be blended in some how to cover the guys who are really the backbone of the sport, the limited racers. someone could realistically do a proper job on a hour and a half commercial free hbo type deal i'd guess. we have to realize who the target audience is. it ain't us. it's people who watch it because they think we're crazy, just like rodeo or bein' UFC fighter.. that's who. faster is crazier. nbc prolly thought they did good.

IMO if the show is going to be an hour long I would rather see them pick a team, in this case the McMillin's and follow them from pre run to finish like they have done with shows on Discovery HD about baja and the Herbst or RG. Obviously to follow McMillin they would have had to predict that tehy would have won but it is just plain impossible to cram an adventure like baja with as many unbeliveable stories as their are in 1 a one hour time slot with commercials. I think NBC did an alight job, I enjoy just seeing the sport on TV. It was fun for me and my kids to watch and for me to explian who the racers were and what not. But I think there should be a Dust to Glory like movie made for each 1000. SO who wants to pay for it? LOL
With that being said that turn they showed of the Penhall COPS car was HAIRY! and the pass PAB put on RG was SICK!!!!

The best coverage of the Baja 1000 in my opinion or any type Baja racing & behind the scene play by play was performed by some guy named Cameron Steele and his crew...Awesome, the real deal.
Not sure if he has ever been offered any type of deal or budget by NBC or anyone else, but I know he is the guy to make it happen although he probably enjoys racing more!
