Dumont Dunes observations.....
Today I spent all day (9 hrs) flying air support for the sheriff and BLM out at Dumont Dunes. I have to say that I am very impressed at how many users of the dunes play by the rules and don't cause any problems. I'm not sure how many people were out there maybe 100,000?? Hell, I'm only guessing but out of all those people we only had about 8 ATV riders who were boonie whomp'in out in the Death Valley Monument area and one in the salt creek area that were out of bounds. I think BLM wrote them up for the violations.
Just when we were ready to depart the Baker airport this evening the command post had a 911 cell call that two sand rails colided in the very east end of the dunes and one person was ejected and critical and they didn't know where they were. We responded to the area in less than 7 minutes from Baker but had to spend quite a while to find the crash. We finally found it and guided ground rescue personnel to the crash. I was really sweating bullets since I was running short on fuel for the trip home and it was getting dark and we couldn't hardly see anything but what the heck. My observer said something to the effect of "no guts, no glory"
Somebody was hurt bad and we had to find them. It all worked out and we spent a dark flight home over the desert and were on fumes when we hit Rialto. Other than that, you off roaders make for a boring day.

Dave, be careful!
When it comes to flying I reserve the right to "have no guts".

Yeah I almost lost a good friend (Corey Kaush) due to running out of fuel (Hunter plane crash). I dont want to see any offroader die because he was flying to long to search for someone...........go get fuel and come back.............

Re: Dumont Dunes observations.....
i was out at dumont this Thanksgiving weekend and i noticed that it was laid back and people were enjoying themselves. i lady at our camp who had never been camping before commented on how little trash there was for so many people. all in all it was a good safe weekend.
