Best coating for roll cage
i just finished up the rear half of my ranger and am wondering what is the best coating for the bare metal. I am looking for a spray paint preferably something industrial that will be pretty tough. Any input would be appreciated!!

Re: Best coating for roll cage
You should try blueing it. It would make the metal almost black, protect from rust, and you are still able to detect for cracks.
Same coating that is on guns and some shop tools.

Re: Best coating for roll cage
Hey that's a really great idea that I had never thought of before!!!
Probably quite a bit more expensive than any "normal spray paint" though

Re: Best coating for roll cage
Although it sounds like a great idea in theory. . .it would be VERY impractical in practice. . .
. . .blueing is very similar to chroming. . .it is achieved by immersing the entire part in a heated tank containing blueing salts. . .the salts aren't very expensive, BUT finding a tank big enough for your rollcage, getting enough of the salts to fill the tank, and finding/creating a method to heat the solution to the proper temperature would be expensive, difficult, and VERY bulky
There are some wipe on-wipe off systems available, but they are intended for small touch up jobs and I would imagine that the quality of the finish on something this large wouldn't be that great. . .

Re: Best coating for roll cage
Bluing does not protect against rust well. It would look cool until the first time the truck sat out in the rain.

Re: Best coating for roll cage
That depends on how well of a blueing job you do. . .
. . .do it the way most manufacturer's do now and it will rust for sure. . .do it like it used to be done and you barely have to do anything to it. . .
. . .doesn't really matter either way since it's not a practical solution for this application

x2 on the Krylon, but use gloss black, looks better when you clean it

if your going to rattle can it, use a bright color just to be different, why use black? wouldnt a bright color be easier to see a crack with?
