Northern Baja Storm Damage- Stranded landowners up on top of San Telmo
An excerpt from an email to Racers and Ranchers members regarding a relief effort for Rancho Conception:
As many of you know, Northern Baja sustained alot of damage from the
recent rainstorm. Many bridges have been washed out, cutting off
resources to several towns and ejidos. In particular, Rancho Conception
above El Coyote on the observatory road has been totally cut off. Mike
and Pamela Wirths are stranded, their access road has been severly damaged
and not passable with their vehicles. They have a front loader but the job
of digging themselves out requires a bull dozer. To make matters worse,
San Telmo Rd. leading to their entrance has been damaged too and is
impassable. They have enough food for a week but are low on diesel and
gasoline. They operate on solar and so far so good with sunshine.
Above Rancho Conception is the observatory and Condor center. All people
at these locations are stuck as well. Today they hiked out to see if they could get down and San Telmo Road is impassble up top due to landslides.
Mexican officials may not be able to get up there for weeks. Both groups
are coordinating with the Mexican military for emergency supply drops via
helicopter.
Mike Leon at Mikes Sky ranch was contacted today and said he could not get his bulldozer across the river in front and the back roads are very bad.
Racers and Ranchers will be organizing a relief effort detail for next
weekend. At this time our plan would be to attempt to access Rancho Conception
with bikes, atv's and utv's. We will need volunteers with atv's and utv's
to haul gear to access the entrance road to the ranch. At that point, we
will attempt to repair enough of the exisiting road to get a quad into the
ranch. There are several deep washed out sections on the road that we will
need to dig into to make it passable.
A member has offered a quad to the owners as temporary transportion until
they can get the road repaired with a bulldozer.
If you are interested in paricipating as a volunteer or have specific
equipment you can contribute, please email [email protected]
We will need manpower, gear and vehicles. R&R does not have the resources
to cover expenses for volunteers. If you decide to participate in this
effort it will be at your own expense. We will do our best to locate
suitable lodging for all.
As the days develop, we will have more details on the effort, departure
date/time and specific needs.
We are emailing this to all R&R members, current and expired.

Re: Northern Baja Storm Damage- Stranded landowners up on top of San Telmo
Wow, I'm blown away- I had not heard about this yet. We were driving up the peninsula last October and got the experience of being in a hurricane hit on the the southern tip first hand. We were thinking the trip would be delayed for at least two or three days before the roads would be re opened. But those guys do not wait for outside help and get sh#t done right after the storm was over to get the roads reopened. We were not taking any pavement routes, and they were getting the washouts smoothed or filled in everywhere immediately, including the dirt routes.
Everbody please pitch in and give back what you can to help these guys! Thanks Roman.

OK! I'm in. I'm busting my butt trying to get my 1450 ready for it's first race, but that doesn't seem all that important compared to this.
I have an F-350 4x4 with a winch (and camper), or simply my Ford Bronco 4x4 which I trust wholeheartedly. I can throw the bronco on a trailer, and bring both. Send me details, but it sounds like coming in from Mike's Sky Ranch is the hot ticket? Been there a few times. I have shovels, axes, generators, cook stoves, etc.
Any other "Bronco blood-brothers" as (Ted Nugent likes to say) up for an adventure? I damn-well promise we can get something up to these folks. I will post on class3racing and gofastbroncos.com as well.
As my amazing grandfather Bill used to say: "I can't leave before noon". I think it meant he was ready to go anytime!!

I hope everyone gets the help needed.
I think the plan is to leave very early on Sat. morning... from the border area. I will probably leave Friday to get closer (it's a few hours from here).
You are welcome to ride with me.
I'm debating what to bring though. I may go to Vegas to get my F-150. It's the most capable vehicle I own... 35's with chains on all 4 - when needed.
Any Pike is welcome! (do you like angry music? ha ha). I will be bringing shovels, a generator, a cook stove... and maybe some food!!! I was going to put my Bronco or F-150 on a trailer.

Any updates?
I am on the fence between taking the F-350 with camper and trailer... or just the bronco and doing it "lite". Either way I have shovels, gloves, jack, lights, gen... etc!!!

Update:
We will meet at the last US Exit, Camino de La Plaza, at the IHOP in the Plaza Las Americas. If anyone needs to buy car insurance there is a place near the off ramp.
Please be there by 6:30am and be ready to leave. We will probably get there early to have breakfast.
Tonight I heard from Mike at Conception. The access road to his place is open to the rocky section that we will work to make passable, then there are two wash outs approximately 15 feet deep and 10 feet wide.
Just a thought, if anyone has a chainsaw, bring it in case we need to make some bridges.
Everyone says just bring in a dozer. He's trying to but until then we will go help.
