    Video editing ?

I have an older VHS-C camcorder. I have many VHS-C tapes (family and racing) that I would like to convert to DVD. I have software that came with my new computer for editing dvds and other video. However, I don't know how to get the video from my VHS-C tapes to the computer.

Here's what I think. I would put the tape into the camcorder and then hook that up to the computer. It has an "S-Video" type connection. I used this on my old computer to download digital pics (from the same camcorder) but never a video. The software included was specific to the pictures, I think.

Anyone ever done this with a "S-Video" type connection??? And what software do I need?? Thank you.

There are many video cards that have connectors that look like S-video, but they are not neccessarily S-video. If your video card does, in fact, have an S-video input it should have instructions and software for capturing video (you have not stated the make/model of your video card).

There are numerous cards out there that can do what you have described. Some cards also have S-video OUT which will not do you any good. There are also stand-alone products which may connect via USB or 1394 (Firewire), that can capture your video.

To sum up, if your video card was not sold as "video capture" capable, you may be limited to still frame only.

The method I use for your situation is as follows. Purchase a DV converter box for a few hundred bucks. The box will allow you to connect a S-Video or Composite video Source to the box. The box will connect to yout PC or MAC via Firewire (1394). The box will do the conversion from anolog to digital. You will still need a video capture application on your computer. Most DV converter boxes will come with some sort of low end capture and editing application. PM me if you have any additional questions.

I bought a Dazzle "Digital Video Creator 150 Hi-Speed" and it works good. You hook your camcorder to the Dazzle device with your S-Videoa and two audio cords and then the device hooks to your computer through USB 2.0 ports (faster than regular USB). It came with a program to edit videos, add music, titles, etc. Seems to work fairly well for me, but I'm not making anything super hi-tech. It cost about $199, but at the time had a $50 rebate.Check www.Dazzle.com . Pinnacle makes some very similar items as well. Both make some devices to capture video from your camcorder and send it to the computer for as low as like $75-80, but they don't come with many extras and tend to be slower USB 1.0 connections.

USB 2.0 is much faster than USB 1.0 that's for sure, but doesn't do well with sustained data streams. It hadles bursts of data great at a high speed, but tends to bog down with a constant stream of data. If at all possible, you will be much better off with a Firewire 400 or a Firewire 800 card in you PC and a DV converter that is FW (1394) compatible.
