Angry Get Ready...Racing in Nevada Is Over As We Know It...

The BLM has proposed the elimination of desert racing in the Las Vegas District in April, May and September (SCORE race ). January, February, October, November and December would stay close to what we now have. Racing in June, July and August would be only after sunset. Why? Yep, you guessed it - the tortoise. Funny, they can't tell us how many tortoises are out there, but they feel that the 3 takes this year constitute implemeting this ridiculous way of stopping racing. Please, even if you don't live here in Nevada, take a moment to send them a comment. Ask them for an exact number of tortoises they are protecting. Ask them why they don't know and how they can say they need to stop racing to protect them. What about the weekend recreationalists? What about the businesses affected by this nonsense? Feb 10th is the deadline for this - come on everyone, let's rally and show them this is wrong, wrong, wrong!!!! Please send your comment to:

What I don't understand is why a power company has to spend 25 million dollars to relocate 25 turtles so they don't "over crowd" the turtles on the land around them.
How do you over crowd something that is suppose to be on the brink of extinction?

Exactlly, i'm trying to convince my government teacher to let me debate on this topic. They will relocate said amount of turtles, which half of will most likely die, when all of them would be alive if there was a race going on.

Re: Get Ready...Racing in Nevada Is Over As We Know It...

    To Whom It May Concern:

I am a desert recreationalist with my family. I use the desert to recreate all year long, not just during the months you are proposing to cut use down to. I am of the understanding that this is due to the desert tortoise. My question to you is: how many desert tortoises reside in the areas you are trying to close to racing? An exact number is requested. I know how many "takes" there were in 2009, which is what you are trying to use to justify the closures. Jean is classified by US Fish and Wildlife as a low tortoise population. I also know that you don't have an exact number or even a guesstimate of how many tortoises there are. I believe this is yet another move by the Las Vegas District BLM office to close down desert racing. Without exact data regarding tortoise numbers, how can you possibly justify closing these areas to off-road racing? I would like a response to my questions and points made in this email.

    Thank you,

Re: Get Ready...Racing in Nevada Is Over As We Know It...

A couple of questions: Isn't this subject to the NEPA process, requiring an EIS, public comment period, etc., or does this fall under another process where the NEPA rules somehow don't apply? These decisions are supposed to be made on "the best available science". If the BLM doesn't even kow how many tortoises there are, this sounds like an arbitrary decision, which isn't legal. Of course someone, or a group of someones would need to to step up, file a lawsuit, etc.

There's nothing on the BLM website yet, so I'm guessing this is brand new. Email sent.
