I hate to say it, But Nevada will be mandated per the federal government law to install travel
management on federal lands...BLM and USFS in the near future
Every state is required to eventually follow the guidelines set forth back in the Nixon era
California is the model, we have only a few designations, Open travel, Limited use and Wilderness,
In some case special management.
These are WEMO(West Mojave plan) and Nico dictate how these lands are divided up and
designated/managed here in California.
I suspect the reason Nevada has not prioritized and implement yet is there just is not the
amount of population and user impact as we have here in Ca....yet
So far, California is the only state that has areas of "Open Travel" status... as in "Open area" such as
JV , Stoddard, Spangler, Rasor, El Mirage on ....FEDERAL LANDS
This is why losing JV will have ramifications nation wide, never again will we see an open OHV area
of this scale ever again in this country, once the rest of the country catches up with travel management
Cal State SVRAs such as Pismo and Gorman are state run lands, different animal
So back to Nevada
Now is the time to get together with Nevada BLM and lawmakers and start asking for and
identifying "Open OHV areas" like we have here in California BEFORE Travel management process starts
and incorporate those identified areas when the feds start pushing BLM and USFS for travel management
If we snooze on this, kiss racing in Nevada bye bye in a few years regardless if CBD throws up a road block
here and there in today's world
We have recently seen we are up against some stiff competition for
our recreation lands, the energy companies want it, the greens want it
locked up,Military... we are getting squeezed more than ever.
Other web sites I mention this subject on draws much flack and bitterness, nobody wants to
be "Managed" but Im not the "save the world" green driven politician who makes these laws.

I bet all those emails that are getting sent are just getting deleted by some 19year old secretary at the blm office, then the sender also eventually deletes them from their email outbox then by the time something is brought up there is no proof of the hundreds of emails sent. what we need to do is get a big petition like J Prich is/was planning on doing at all the offroad races, snore, score, bitd, mran, set up a booth on the entrance to dumont, amargosa on big weekends, booth at supercross like they did for the apex/nellis dune riding area, in the local offroad shops, 4wheelparts, dirtbike shops, maybe get another big clean up day call out a local news crew get it on film, let the majority see that offroaders just don't go out raise a bunch of dust, light stuff on fire, run over tortoises and act like hooligans. I was at last years mint400 and i first parked off the highway(I15) which was not a spectator area like i thought. but we moved to find a better spot. which we couldnt so i tried to go back to the highway spot i was before but by then a highway patrol was there and told me i couldnt. so when i said "how come all those people are still there?" he said "i am going to sit here and stop people coming in, and eventually everyone will be gone. I'm not going to go over there and tell everyone to leave and possibly cause a riot or get myself into an altercation and get myself hurt" WHHHAAAT?? is this what the average person thinks of the offroad community? that we are out to start riots and try to hurt law enforcement?!?! if so thats why we are getting thrown under the bus by everyone. we need to make sure everyone see's a offroad community that takes care of our desert! takes care of the animals in it and cleans up the trash. pack it in, pack even more out! that is the stuff we need to do. along with fight the politics. Mike Payne is doing a lot of political stuff for mran and basically off road community in general. he has a website: motorizedweb.com http://motorizedweb.com/
It might be time to petition USFWS to de-list the tortoise. Unfortunately, that sort of thing usually ends up as a lengthy court battle. It might, however, force BLM and USFWS to come up with reasonable counting standards and conduct an actual count.

Mike Payne was talking about hiring some scientists to do some counting of turtles and trying to get it taken off the endangered species list. of course he knows what he is talking about and has some education behind him so it sounds a lot better coming from him and since i have a terrible memory i can't remeber all the details. so maybe it would be beneficial to start a fund for hiring the right people to properly count turtles? I thought about trying to organize a fun run, like a northern nevada trail ride or something to that effect to get money raised that goes straight to guys like Mike Payne and J Prich that want and DO put a ton of their own time into saving our public lands for us to race and have fun on
EDIT: sorry, desert tortoise isn't endangered yet, its federally listed on the "threatened list". they must be different?
maybe things will get better when Prince Harry gets voted out..........

For the record, I'm not even in the same ball park as Mike! He really has his stuff together and has obviously dedicated a lot of time to dealing with this stuff. Which leads me to making the point that if every racing organization were to appoint their own "Mike" and then all of the "Mike's" got together to collectively strategize, there might be a chance at making some real progress.
For the record, the letter deal for Primm is off, but I still think the idea is valid. While there is a downside in sending a form letter, I believe the value of an operation like that lies in its symbolism. In a perfect word, the thousands of people who come out for race weekends, etc would all write their own letters but thats probably not going to happen. So my thought is I'd rather the BLM get 1,000 copies of the same letter signed by different people then 100 original letters and emails sent by the handful who are able to make time to do it.
Regardless, I really am seriously interested in trying to put together something, a coalition of sorts perhaps made up of reps from the various racing organizations to help create a common agenda. We're basically dealing now with a bunch of foot soldiers fighting a good fight, but with no general to lead the charge.
The political process is a natural part of being for the environmental types and alternative energy companies. The political process is pretty far down the priority totem pole for off roaders and I believe that's part of the reason the OHV community consistently gets its butt handed to it.
Bottom line is I don't claim to be really smart about this stuff, or even anything for that matter (!) but I am willing to invest my time and energy into gathering up and working with the people who are in order to try to salvage something here. Maybe we're all tilting at windmills but I feel like its at least worth the effort to try to take some collective action here.
a lot of this takes money, whether its buying people off or paying for lawyers and such or getting money for a group of "Mike Paynes" to go take care of business in carson city or blm meetings for an organization like you mentioned maybe another blue ribbon coalition type of thing? these environmentalists have things like "save the desert tortoise" fund raisers and stuff like that. how about getting a group together and make a license plate?. i heard if you have X amount of people you can make a specialty license plate for anything. Let make a OHV one with all the fees associated with it go toward fighting for our rights? I bet in nevada you could get plenty of people to get those plates, plus if they are cool looking you might get people that don't even care about racing or offroading to get them and then you have support from a place you wouldn't you wouldn't normally get. you have to make it simple, if it involves writing personalized letters or taking time from work to show up to meetings we will never make it. you can't pay for these expensive atvs, sandrails, dirtbikes, buggies, trucks without a job. If its easy like signing a petition while they are paying for their new goodies at a shop, or sign ups at a race or registering your vehicle with cool license plates or joining a organization with a monthly/yearly fee or having a trail ride fundraiser looking for donations or get sponsors from companys who depend on our hobbies. it could happen
This is as dumb as closing the lakes because the oil from the boats kills fish and contaminates the water we use to water our fields and crops.... Or banning skateboards because the cause broken arms..... Save the tortoises so the air force can bomb in area 51. And they can allow people to scout for mining rights but no racers who bring revinue to the state..
