Here is the reply from the Blue Ribbon Coalition.
Ken,Thanks for emailing. The planning in NV is on our radar, as is the BLM's LV RMP revision, but I have not had time to look over the specific situation. This may be a very dangerous situation. The Endangered Species Act is the Iron Curtain for legal challenge of BLM closures. Individual OHV'ers must contact their political representatives and demand a solution that protects OHV use and racing activities. Please keep in touch,Brian HawthorneBlueRibbon Coalition208-237-1008 ext 102

We all should be members. I am! I challenge you to join! They look out for the concerns of those who ride motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATVs, even horses... whatever we do on PUBLIC land, they are here to help. Our collective dollars are possibly even more important than our e-mails... but Brian also suggests we contact our political reps, in addition to the BLM letters.

Still angry after all these years!
Mawtrophykart, the desert is vast, look at a map of California, Arizona, and Nevada. Yet we are allowed to use less and less, none of us race with the intent to harm any wildlife. You claim carbon footprint and I say BS, any damage we racers do to the desert with our high horsepower vehicles gets erased with time. I have tried to go run areas we used to run 20 years ago in Mexico and without GPS they are lost to time. I also took a run on the California side of what used to be the Parker 400 and it is like cutting cross country in areas, no trace of race course that was ran on for 20 years. The public is swayed by the media and human emotions over a turtle that might be in an area we race on. Lobbyists and Enviro Bureaucrats use this human emotion to gain grants and fund studies they all make money off of and the corruption runs deep. When progress wants to add a solar power plant, they push things through under the green banner as latching on to the green label frees up money faster, even when some of these so called green projects may have a negative impact over time. We have a right to use our public lands to race on and the BLM needs to protect these rights, but why would they as Snore, Score, and BITD do little to line their pockets. If you think this is about turtles you are ignorant as I have been racing in Las Vegas races for over 20 years and in all that time I have only seen 1 desert turtle at the 1993 Gold Coast 300, yet I have been in other areas where I have seen hundreds in 1 day.

Thank you Jamie you are an ambassador of desert racing, why don’t you get a job at the BLM, in a few years you would run the place![]()

Some people just have "different" opinions... in this case very different. I would rather suggest the following:
1) They don't know what is killing the tortoises. Even biologists will admit this. Some have said "a respiratory disease".
2) Sorry, but some things on our planet will not make it. Let's round up a couple hundred tortoises, put them in an enclosed area (like the one not far from Glamis). NOBODY will be allowed in there, ever, and let's see how they do. Ever heard of Darwin? I supposed Mawtrophykart would be happy if the T-rex still roamed the earth. OH... by the way, we didn't cause them to be extinct, nor the Sabre Tooth Tiger, etc etc etc. Let's lock an extra hundred up in a zoo just in case.
3) This area is listed as a "low population zone". We get to race here because of that. What about the power plant, the proposed airport, or the HUGE strip mine just 10 miles south? Have you flown over THAT devistation?
4) I have been going to the desert my whole life. I must admit I have seen 3 (!) ever!! Two were nowhere near a race course... and both were in the ROAD. I wonder why they are going extinct (if they are)? It takes them 20 minutes to make it across a road! In one case I DID the unthinkable... I carefully moved it () because this was a busy gravel road and he was at the bottom of a hill. I probably wouldn't have seen him except I was going slow looking for a deer to kill. Oh God... now I've really done it. They will be next on the list.
Back to the subject at hand. Join the BRC and send letters/e-mails to the reps and BLM and... better yet, their bosses. They are supposed to work for US!!!
Still angry after all these years!
Come on, now... it wasn't a tortoise burrough - it was a burroughing owl burrough and the BLM didn't even see it on their many recons of the course until the day of the race! And just so you know, it is SNORE that goes out and repairs the damage and degradation after the races - not anyone else. They pay the fines instead of repair the course. The BLM doesn't even know how to repair the vegetation - they call us and ask us to go out and do it - not just in areas we race, either! We go out and replant it to better than when we got there (using native vegetation) - and not just our areas, the other org's too just because we're good guys like that
They do and there were only 3 documented takes in the last many years...
Yes, but that doesn't matter - it's all about $$$$$$
It may have been moved, but not before a shltload of them were euthanized...
Thank you!! Do you want an area set up for the cause in Tech? I would be more than happy to put you in a place where you can contact every racer who comes through
Oh man, don't even get me started with that b.s.! I can't tell you how many times at races I have seen the BLM rip across the desert with zero regard for any bushes, possible tortoises or any other plant or wildlife just because they can! I have taken pictures over the years when one of them has come over to me because I am parked in the scrub grass and they come over and plow through bushes and leave ruts in the ground just to get to me!
You know, Scott, there was a position that opened up last year just for this - I thought about going for it, but then I wouldn't be able to continue doing what I love to doAnd Thank You, Sir!

Jamie,
I absolutely would love a little assistance. I was planning on getting a hold of you later this week once I got the letter done up. Have already chatted with Don Wall and he's on board so I was thinking if I could set up a table at the end of tech where everyone passes through, we'll put up a big sign and I'll have a huge stack of form letters.
It'll take all of 30 seconds for everyone to throw their signature on the form and we'll throw it in an envelope and get it mailed off the following Monday so that the letters will arrive prior to the end of the month.
Let me get the letter knocked out and run past a few people and I'll touch base with you regarding getting a table set up. I really think 1,000 letters is plenty doable if everyone, racers, crew, friends and family, etc all stop by and slap down their signature.
After BAP I'll start floating some ideas about tackling some of the bigger issues like the tortoise management, financial impact, etc. We all know the OHV community represents a large block of folks both politically and financially, that there are some serious doubts about the actual condition of the desert tortoise and the impact racing has on their habitat, and the obvious hypocrisy being shown by the BLM to yeild land to alternative energy bids that they were previously denying access to because of environmental concerns.
What I'd like to start working towards is taking those abstract ideas and adding actual concrete data too (exactly how many tortoises or burrows have been verifiably damaged as a result of off road racing annually, etc) A million things we need to add substance too in order to make a more compelling argument.
But again, that's getting ahead of the game a bit. For the short term, let's use BAP as a means to collectively have our voice heard and then move forward from there. Appreciate your time and all you do for the sport.
Anything you need, you've got it. I have the perfect spot for you to set up. We have over 300 pre-entered so you may want to bring out more than just 1,000, especially as there are vendors there, too, who would gladly take part in this effort. I can't thank you enough for your concern and hard work in getting this going on your end - it's truly commendable and quite the endeavor.. you can call me anytime 702-343-7761![]()

Email sent and when you (Jason) have the letter done, post it here and we'll download and send off!
Yeah sorry forgot to add, I'll also post the letter here once it's done by the end of this week for those of you who can't make it to Primm so you can print it out, sign it, and mail it off yourself.
You guys pay no intention to Mawtrophywuss. He has done to many things against the rules that SNORE don't want him racing with them and he is banned. I could go on and on but he is not worth it. You know most at SCORE and BITD think he's an idiot also but they want his money. Grow up medical marijuana man if you notice only the ones that hang around you think your cool dude
