Joining chassis rails!!!!!!!!
Hello,
does anybody have any advise for joining chassis rails on an 93 toyota pick up. I want to extend the chassis from a regular to a long wheel base. basically a regular cab to an Xtra cab.. The truck will be fully caged to help with strength. I just have no idea how to joint the to ends of the extension to the existing chassis.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Why have one, when you can have two for twice the price!!!

Yes the frames are fully boxed. What do you mean by fish plating? Sorry if this is a very stupid question, I new to this fabrication thing.

Re: Joining chassis rails!!!!!!!!
But the chassis rails together and weld them. Grind the welds down and fit a daimond shaped plate over each join (so 4 in total) and then weld them on.
Where in NZ are you?
There aren't stupid questions, only people too stupid to ask simple questions!

Re: Joining chassis rails!!!!!!!!
Here's what I would suggest. . .a little twist from the above picture and maybe a little stronger. . .
. . .since your existing frame rails are boxed I notch back the sides of the existing frame rail a couple of inches and then I notch the top of the new box section tube that you are going to use to extend the frame the same amount. . .in this way you can slide the new extensions into the existing frame and your won't be doing a straight, all the way around butt weld, but a zig-zag. . .more surface area and more support for the extension.
After you get the extensions butt welded on. . .grind down the welds and put some diamond shaped reinforcement plates over the butt welds and fillet weld them over the butt-welded sections. . .should be super strong then. . .
You could also slug the frame rails with the next size smaller box section tube, slide the new rails onto that leaving just enough gap to do a V-groove weld to join the slug, existing frame, and extensions together. . .if you were to go that route I would suggest drilling some decent size holes in both the existing frame and the extensions so that you can weld the slug to the frame rails and extensions and hold everything together real nice.
Good Luck!
