It also looks like the co-driver's door is bashed in pretty well, maybe they hit something on that side that sheared the grub screws?

they said it was the top link pin that broke, and yes they where waiting for him at morelia with spares , the door i dont know.

p.s. it does look like the grub screws where the problem though. (hex ones the hold the arm to the torsion liefs right ? )

Yeah, those are the ones! The aftermarket grub screws don't hold up, we use stock VW grub screws - had to look through lots of "junk" hardware to find spares for our car! I wonder which broke first, the link pin or the grub screws? I can see it happening either way.
